Final Thoughts!

Working here at this internship was honestly a great experience! I knew as I walked into Pearlridge Printers that it would be a start to something that would shape me to become a better graphic designer. My supervisor Merriam has such a kind soul and listening to her experiences and learning from her through her techniques and visions has opened my eyes to all the possibilities. Art is a perspective and there are so many viewpoints to it so I'm glad I had a mentor that showed me another side of it. I really enjoyed the outcome of how everything turned out at the internship. It wasn’t so vigorous so I was able to work at my own pace and the projects thrown my was was a great way to get my feet into the industry. If there was something that I would have done differently it would be to set goals throughout my internship. Maybe have a final outcome of some sort. But I was able to expand my knowledge on applications such as In design and Illustrator which helped me out with classes that had projects based off of those apps. I feel honored to have learned from Merriam and I hope one day I can open my own Design Studio on the island as well.

Day 23- November 5, 2019

My last days here at the internship which is also perfect timing because the book I started is almost complete. My supervisor was able to print the whole book and the committee came in to make any changes. I was actually able to edit some pages while they guided my on what they wanted to be done. Once the changes are made the pages will be printed in the shop, but they do get sent out for binding since it is a thicker book. I was given an extra book for remembrance and I couldn't be any happier with how things went with my internship

Day 22- October 22, 2019

Currently making last minute touches to ads that are being sent late, which is not too bad. I also had to start expanding the background for each layout past the bleed line. Once my supervisor and I have made the changes, the committee of this book will come in and proofread everything as well as edit the book, whether to take certain things out or add certain things in.

I am currently adjusting the Programme for the book. The second Programme in the picture above is the current file, but the clients did not like the style of it and wanted us to refer back to the old Programme from a past book. The top picture of the Programme that's colored yellow and red was from an older book they had done a long time ago. my task was to turn the current Programme just like the first picture. I learned how to make tables in Indesign as well as merg cells, formatting text correctly within the tables and setting color. It was a great learning experience for me.

Continued to work on the second Filipino Pageant book. The picture I used above is a sample of a page ad that is not already laid out. Typically I just have pictures sent over through email and I would have to use that to create my own version. Sometimes I am not given a message so I would have to come up with my own. I also had to find my own backgrounds and used certain ones throughout the book and made sure to stay consistent with colors and fonts.

One of the tasks I was given to do today was to create a specific stamp a client wanted. I was actually able to discuss with him and took the order in myself. My client has his own business and wanted a stamp with different dingbat fonts. It was kind of tricky because some of the fonts/logos he wanted was hard to find, so instead I reverted to illustrator and created my own logos to replicate the ones my client wanted. After setting the fonts/logos on Indesign I had to make a custom order to create my work into a usable stamp.

Continued to work on the second Filipino Pageant book, so here’s an update. Once I finished sorting through the emails for ads I then transfer them over to Indesign. I like to place the images that are already laid out so I know which ones I need to finish. Ads without any layouts are a bit trickier because you have to place photos, set text and backgrounds without any directions from the customers. But in a way it gives me room to be creative and come up with different techniques and methods to set each ad apart from looking similar to others.

There is a lot of Filipino Organizations that do pageants who get their books/souvenirs done at my internship. Their books consist of messages from the committee, information about the pageants and ads that support the contestants. I had experience with a book that was completed during the first months of the internship and now I was given the task to complete another one. The first steps into organizing the book is to run through the list of all the ads that will be a part of it. The list that I attached above is the order I had to go by. usually all the ads are either given through email or gets put into the Dropbox. I would have to go in and search each email and figure out which ad went where. It was a very tedious task but I think the most important because it is easier to locate each had and place them in files numerically so its easier to lay them out in Indesign. Once I had all the files or know which files are missing I can place their pictures in Indesign and start laying them out for design. If the ads themselves have been already laid out by the clients all I had to do was copy and place them on the page but if they weren't I had to create my own background and add text and lay them out myself which was pretty fun because that was a role a graphic designer would have to do.
