Create value, not friction, and I'll enjoy your content

So here's my thought:

There are a couple—and possibly more—things working against online ad success.

#1—Greener Grass Over There: If your stuff takes too long to load, or the site isn't fun/fast/interesting enough, there are millions more search engine results waiting for users—we'll simply try another.

#2—Banner Blindness: We users have evolved natural defenses against ads (Google the phrase "Banner Blindness").

So, what's a content publisher/advertiser to do?

Understand this: We users are here as a favor to ourselves…they seek valuable content. Make the experience friction-free and we'll send our friends to you! Use subtle ad integration—check out what Facebook and Instagram are doing to keep the ads non-interruptive.

Here's the scenario that just played out when I clicked the link to 4029's slideshow played out more like a conversation:

4029: Hi user, welcome to our slideshow about America's Most Shoplifted Products! Want to see them?

Me: Yep. Should I click to tell you that's why I'm here?

4029: Yes, please! Here's an ad about electricity!

Me: But I only want to see the content you promised…

4029: You'll have to click "Close ad" first! Or maybe click the ad and leave the page to find out about this special electricity offer! Wouldn't you like to do that?

Me: Um, "Close ad"

4029: Ok, here's what you came to see!

Me: (merrily clicking "Next", enjoying the first handful of slides) 

4029: Hey, wanna buy a truck?

Me: Um, "Close ad"

4029: Ok, here's what you came to see!

Me: Hey, I actually don't care that much about this content. But oh, wait, people steal diabetes test strips?? Aren't those usually covered by insurance?

4029: Hey, wanna upload photos to this bank's website?

Me: Um, I'm out. "Cmd+W"

I can never seem to find rain soothing

Most people love rain. It helps them sleep at night, its fun to play in, and it seems refreshing. But rainy nights keep me up to such ridiculous times its starting to become annoying
