Today is Intersex Day of Remembrance, also known as Intersex Solidarity Day, which was first celebrated in 2005 on the initiative of Intersex International. The date coincides with the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a 19th century French intersex figure whose memoirs were later published by Michel Foucault. Today is a day to draw attention to the struggle for intersex rights, whose issues are often overlooked, even within the LGBTIQ+ community.
The violent nature of the socially constructed sex and gender binary is perhaps most clearly exposed in the existence of intersex people. The struggles for both intersex and transgender liberation are deeply interconnected and intertwined. True liberation for queer people isn’t possible without the liberation of intersex people from the forced gender and sex binaries of our society.
