I came to law school what now seems like a long time ago. My logic for coming was fuzzy, something about an academic pursuit better taken through the avenue of professional school. I cannot say that I learned too much, although there were some valuable nuggets of information about Native American jurisprudence, water usage, and the like. What I learned most was to speak the language of power. I learned how power speaks, what words are elided and which are emphasized, a sort of thieves’ cant that determines life and death in half-hidden terms.
