In The Boardroom Evaluation:
To recap what I did for this brief was two different composed shots of two men who co-owned a gym together in Colchester. They held many classes in this gym.
My first photo is an action photo of both of them within their workplace. The second photo is again both of them but has a personal touch to it. I have them both by a massive tyre, and Jan the one who is known for being super active and constantly working out, is eating some Ben and Jerry’s. Patrick let on to me that this was Jan’s guilty pleasure and everyone envied him for being able to eat so much of the stuff and have an insane physique still. I thought this was quite an ironic touch to the photo, and hopefully would tell viewers more about him.
I am really pleased with the final outcome of this brief, I managed to get a good action shot of the two of them considering I had to shoot from quite far back to fit them both in and try get them both facing me and at a similar height.
My favourite one is definitely the second one where I incorporated the Ben and Jerry’s within it, because I think I composed it really well.
I was going to have them stood back to back but there was some height issues, Patrick being quite small and Jan being really tall. So I had to think how else I could do it, so I made use of the equipment there and used a large tyre. I had Patrick sit on it and Jan sit in front of it. This worked really well, I asked Jan to look really happy to be eating the ice cream, and for Patrick to look at him really disappointed/slightly envious.
I shot both my photos in portrait for the template and think they work really well.
One thing I’m not too sure about is the quality of the second photo when placed in the template and exported as a PDF... When I open it it looks a bit blurry until you zoom in and then it is clear.
What I like:
- the compositions, I feel I made the most of the location and staged it well
- the idea/putting a twist on it and using some irony
- that I have met brief requirements of using mixed lighting
What I would change:
- I would get more creative with the lighting as I’m not too keen on the shadows in the first shot.
This brief also lead to me getting the chance to have my work featured on their website and used for advertising purposes.
It also made me realise that fitness/gym type shoots aren't as scary as I thought they would be and that if I could just practice different lighting more I think it would be something I’d consider and enjoy.
