IT WASN’T something they were open about, the exact effects of their curse. They never made themselves apparent, of course, avoiding the language and habits which prompted its effects was second nature after living with it all of their life. Sometime they slipped and ended up choking on flower petals instead of a deserving insult, but Grace had yet to bare witness to that exact unpleasantry. And perhaps forcing themself to talk about it was MORE PAINFUL than the curse itself.
“IT ISN’T quite like that,” Achille began quietly, eyes trained on their hands, folded neatly in their lap. “When, for example, YOU say you can’t talk about something it isn’t LITERAL. You’ve made a promise or the subject is too painful... For me it IS. My father... `e cursed me, really. I can SPEAK NO EVIL. Not a lie. Not an insult. Not a word that could reflect poorly upon the nature of its subject... THE THINGS I `AVE LIVED AND THE PEOPLE WHO `AVE DONE THEM WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY.”
