Oh, my bad then- I was trying to clarify on behalf of myself too, so there wouldn’t be misunderstanding that I was trying to claim something as definite or anything. (A small clarification also when I say the group DICE are likely more akin to confidence tricksters I'm referring to The Great Pretender- in general conmen are associated not as virtuous so I'm unsure as to why TGP was referred by ‘con-artists’ in hindsight, but that was the kind of con group I had in mind. orz)

A slight aside but those masks are...

...bothersome in a number of ways, considering that there’s three of them while four (oh, the dreaded four) of a bunch of other things. I don’t quite know what to do with that information but it doesn’t seem right, huh? There’s only three, while there’s eleven members of DICE (Ouma’s buttons would suggest that much is not a mistake and there’s actually someone missing or rather, hidden)

Good golly, talk about the Ultimate Damage Control. Ouma can be exceptionally harsh sometimes even for a means to an end - curiously, prompting Gonta to admonish him, almost like scolding a child - but later on, it seems he’s kind enough to pick Himiko up from where he left her, and press a bit more softly. It’s considerably less roundabout than that section in the trial, even flat out stating what the problem was with Himiko exactly.

For someone who says he ‘lies to himself’ later on, Ouma seems to be very emotionally aware in comparison to Himiko, who needed a lot of pushing to even get past her barriers. At the least, this could imply he doesn’t protect himself in the same way of using lies as a ‘mental fog’ to cloud his thought processes, or at the least, is aware of the dangers that can cause.

Though while fog can be an issue, hyper awareness can be its own double edged sword, especially when it comes to controlling emotions...

Not sure if you noticed it or not (there's a lot of stuff on this blog you have a very good eye for details and all but it will take time to get through everything hehe) but did you compare the "Killing Game busters" cg from 4th trial with the DICE logo?

Oooh I didn't until you mentioned it actually, thank you for raising that tidbit, Anon! This is a bit interesting come to think of it-

-because of the framing of the split here, with the evil-looking tight smirk and the dark red (or the 'Monokuma black') on the left side of the line, and the crying part of the face (even though Gonta's sweating here) on the right side, is very closely matched (plus, Ouma's mouth tends to look Monokuma-esc in those devilish smirks)

I mean it's not to say that 'Gonta is evidently a part of DICE' or anything - let alone playing this exact role in it - but it's more that, considering that DICE could be a group of intrepid confidence tricksters more than merely pranksters, it does make me wonder if this imagery was intentional to point to an underlying tone of DICE's nature: like they're a bunch of Killing Game Busters themselves even!

Meeting for Sacrifice

Here is something I scrapped up in weird RP format a while ago: an altercation of sorts between Gonta and Ouma. Bear in mind as usual, there’s a fair bit of cryptic subtext with this implying that the two have spoken before about the true nature of Ouma’s role- since they’re genuinely cooperating with each other and all, I think that Gonta knows a lot more than he lets on, mainly about Ouma more than anything else. So I tried to reflect that overall weirdness here, in a way that makes some sense. What can I say, cryptic teases are fun

It’s old too, about a year old since I was too chicken to post it here until now due to its fragment nature. Still I hope it gives the punch that this pair deserves :3 (Of course, Ouma is not nice here. He is close to losing his shit, especially at this point in the story, and as for Gonta? Let’s just say he can be rough when he really wants to be...)

Fun food for thought: Chapter 1 was presented as Kaede acting on her own while taking advantage of Shuichi’s plan. Chapter 4 was all about presenting Gonta as a patsy and Ouma using him.

Rather curious how these two situations parallel each other inversely. We’re led to lift all blame from the former despite him observing throughout, but pile all the blame on the latter because of him observing throughout.

The main difference is we get to observe much of the former, and not so much the latter. But what if the so-called ‘clueless participants’ are the ones who took more advantage? In the case of the former, Kaede notes a few times that if it wasn’t for Shuichi’s idea, she’d be clueless, and yet we blame Ouma for ‘giving Gonta the idea’ and remove Gonta’s agency almost entirely. We don’t even know everything that went down between them, and that’s especially worrying when ‘Miu left alone for a minute to set the scene’ was a plot point.

Shuichi cries about giving Kaede the ropes to do it, but we say ‘shhh, it’s okay’.

Ouma takes blame for ‘messing with Gonta’, and we say ‘that’s the worst’.

What’s even more troubling is the latter involves dealing with the game at a late stage, but the former is the trigger to start the game in the first place.

It’s funny how Chapter 4 is the one where Ouma clashes the hardest with Shuichi, for his own underhandedness in telling lies... just saying.
