Some of the coolest music I’ve chanced upon over the last few weeks has been tunes by Mitski, a Japanese-American singer-songwriter whose got a catalog that is very sharp in creative thoughtfulness and also adept in subtly. I think I instantly enjoyed some of her tunes because, like me, I can tell this artist has trouble fitting in to one specific place, and she sings about her confusion of identity constantly as a result. I find her lyrics to be incredibly meaningful, to the extent that I find myself listening to some of her tunes over and over to extract the full depth-of-meaning from them. For instance, I can’t quite tell if this song, Cop Car from The Turning soundtrack (a bit of generic horror movie, wouldn't recommend it for anything but this song) is about her struggling with how to define herself, or a conscious effort on her behalf to launch a bunch of poetic platitudes at you to cleverly lead the listener into a trap. Either way, I like music artists that are able to create works which get better the more you listen to them. Mitski, I think, is one of those artists and I predict her music will keep getting better as she ages and evolves. The range of music this artist is capable of performing is also an impressive feat; being the type of performer that can go from melancholy to upbeat, sometimes within the context of a full album, sometimes within as little time as a single song. On a side note, I don't fully understand why someone felt the need to attach a picture of an anime character consuming a chocolate bar to this track, but hey, at least it gives me the ability to share a great track on my page!
