Do you have that one fanfic that never got finished but still lingers in the back of your mind? Abandoned fics are bittersweet, especially when they have potential.
One of mine is a SessRin fic done by Inuyasha Cooks. It’s a modern SessRin AU where Rin lives with Kohaku and Sango and encounters Sesshomaru while she’s gardening.
I’m not sure why this one sticks out for me, but I have a few ideas:
The writing style is different from the usual fanfic fare, which I love. The author has a way of making you feel part of the scene, as though you’re sitting on the front porch watching it all play out.
I also enjoy the characterizations of Rin and Sesshomaru. He has a quiet presence the way he’s written that makes the reader look forward to the next scene he’s in. But Rin is interesting too - a young woman, independent, in search of excitement/adventure, something to break up the monotony of the day to day. Torn between the relationship she’s in and the thrill of potential for something new. She’s a very relatable character.
The story has major slow burn energy, and I’m a sucker for slow burns.
I think part of it too is that for some reason when I read this fic I picture Rin’s house as my grandmother’s. It had a porch and garden. A tree shaded street and a sidewalk out front. It was close to the train station, too. Whenever I read this fic I picture my grandma’s house and it gives me no shortage of nostalgia.
If you’re looking for something new and different that’s SessRin, I suggest giving “Leave Him for Me” by Inuyasha Cooks a try.
