The Trouble with “Tribal” and a Teaser for Invisibility Blues

As you may know, we are currently seeking funding in support of our project Invisibility Blues, a critical video series exploring race and representation in games, and with just over a week to go in the Kickstarter campaign, we have created a teaser video showcasing some of the type of analysis we will provide within the series. As our first video is set to engage with character generation engines, in this teaser, we look closely at character creation in Destiny.

We’ve done a lot of work with Destiny in the past, including video analysis, but we haven’t spoken much about the character creation process. In Destiny, players may choose class, race, skin tone, hair and lip color, and may add a colored marking to their character’s face. In this teaser, we look at several factors, but particularly that facial marking, and the implications, as well as narrative potential, for the game.

If funded, we will explore at least five different topics (plus a bonus), themes that may result in multi-part videos, and with each theme, we will also provide text analysis, supporting information and images, and transcripts (you can find the transcript for the teaser video here). We’ll also be able to greatly increase video and audio quality, so all the focus can be on the analysis and gaming’s vast potential. Invisibility Blues is a new video series currently on Kickstarter that aims to discuss racial representation in video games. The women working on this game believe gaming should be for everyone, and everyone should have the chance to see themselves represented in the games they play. Invisibility Blues: Exploring Race in Video Games

A video series critiquing race and representation in contemporary games and game culture.

Announcing a new NYMG project by Samantha Blackmon and Alisha Karabinus: Invisibility Blues, a critical video series analyzing race and representation in video games. For this ambitious project, we are turning to the community for support with our research and production costs.

Our goal is to produce at least five videos (plus a bonus, if funded) exploring different aspects of racial representation in games. In this documentary-style series, we will include voices from the community, alongside our own analysis, in an attempt to broaden the ongoing discussion about race in games.

We love what we do, and we want to bring the discussion to a wider audience. We hope you'll stand with us, by sharing, supporting, and talking about the project as we work.
