Hoverboards And Other Tech Gifts For 2015

One of the holiday season’s most popular gifts - the hoverboard - is facing growing safety concerns after videos showing the boards catching on fire. Noah Kulwin of Re/code says the problem with the “self-balancing scooter” is the battery that powers it.

“What powers these hoverboards is a lithium ion battery, and those batteries are actually really, really delicate... The crux of the problem here is that there’s so many different brands making these. It’s such an insane atmosphere – there’s so many variable prices and there aren’t a whole lot of safety checks in place to make sure that these things are safe before they get to consumers, that it’s just, they kind of flooded the market.” 

There are reliable brands out there, however. Kulwin points to Swagway and IO Hawk as safe bets. For other tech presents, he suggests a virtual reality headset like the Samsung Gear VR or gifting a drone.
