to non-black fanfic writers that want to write about BLM

it’s good to be an ally, but please understand that writing fics can potentially harm us more than help us. especially if what you’ve written is inaccurate, insensitive, romanticizes, triggers, etc whether you see it or not. after all, this isn’t about you, your intentions, or your perspective, it’s about the impact of your writing and what we see. if a black person feels your fic is harmful not helpful, listen! we have voices that want to be heard, especially in regard to the BLM movement.

ALSO keep in mind that there are MANY black people who don’t want it written at all because of reasons like these. there are suggestions given within that post, but you can also click on any of the links below that promote action. your sympathy and kindness are nice, so why stop there? we want all of your support, esp in a manner that moves BLM forward.

below the cut is a compilation of tips from other African Americans besides myself. I will not be giving out names/handles due to the unsafety risk that comes with that. we all agreed to keep each other safe and this is how. if that prevents you from finding this information credible then that is on you — i refuse to compromise black lives for your sake. if you’d like to contribute to this, just message me!

if you still want to write about BLM and offer comfort to blacks, here are some suggestions:

DON’T

don’t use the news/media. it is portraying BLM horribly and misconstruing the truths behind its message and purpose

don’t judge potential “bad” actions by YOUR standards. your morals may not align with those of the oppressed people you’re trying to support. it’s important to not criticize protestors and to not put one protestor against another. the reason for some violent protests is because we have gone ignored. like it or not, BLM has been going on for so long, but notice how it’s only when some get violent that people pay attention. so please don’t write off those frustrations and reasonings. a riot is the language of the unheard

don’t romanticize, gloss over topics, or write only the good things. i know it may be done bc you don’t want to bring your readers down further and some black voices will agree with you. so from another perspective, i’d say the hardships are part of our history too. how is a story supposed to be for me or other blacks if it takes away the very reason we’re here taking action so strongly?

don’t refer to us as POCs or say you’re doing this for POCs. it’s Black Lives Matter for a reason. we are POCs but POCs are not all black and are not all facing the same challenges and injustices that we are

DO

do get input from someone that has experienced these protests, especially a black protestor if you’re trying to write based on that experience. get input from someone who protests but isn’t black if you want to cater to that experience. get input from a black person in america that is too scared to even be at home because police brutality has invaded homes and killed 5 black women. get input straight from the source and ask if it’s okay to write about it and what the best way to do so is. ask questions (you can even ask me!) and do research. this isn’t so you can accurately portray black feelings/experience — smth that no non-black will be able to do — but so that you can respectfully represent BLM, BLM events, and BLM effects.

do respect and honor the reasonings behind BLM. criticizing blacks personally and/or BLM actions, esp if you’re not black, is not okay. it’s Our Lives that we’re fighting for, not yours. so write abt Our Lives, reasonings, history, and everything else that built up to action. don’t take our actions out of context like the media is already doing.

do write the negatives, but show how there’s a light at the other side of the tunnel. if i’m reading a comfort fic (not a “quirky” protestor!enemies to lovers au), i’d want to be given hope.

do keep our identities as african americans relevant. who we are is the reason we’re here fighting for our rights. african americans aren’t “people, they, them” we’re black people of america. there’s no need to shy away from that and i can assure you that it isn’t racist to identify us. doing so acknowledges us, something that we need. there is not a one-size-fits-all when it comes to minority groups

if you can’t write in the details of BLM then please don’t write at all. what you write will affect your readers’ views of the BLM movement and it does not need to be misrepresented any further. 

ask african americans abt BLM — ask more than one bc we’re all different and not just a token for you to justify your writing. research the BLM site + more. if someone points out discrepancies within your fic, please take care to research them so you can better write about the movement.

PLEASE stop submitting fanart to people

i’ve noticed a lot of people have their submissions open and they get other bloggers sharing fanart by saving the image and sending.

Stop.

by doing so, the person who receives it is reposting the work and that’s something artists do not allow, especially without consent. reposting is the same as stealing — even if someone says “credit to owner / this isn’t mine / did you see this fanart? / i couldn’t find the original artist but look”

you’re not only putting the receiver at risk, but instead of praising the artist, you’re giving them a big slap in the face because you’re doing at least one of these things:

ignoring their consent

not crediting them

taking attention away from their original post

if you really like someone’s artwork then share the link to their work!! the original link — not a post on pinterest or weheartit or wattpad or some other place where it’s reposted. share the link to the original source so that artist can get the recognition they deserve without harm.

and if you’re getting artwork submitted to you:

Stop Posting It.

you’re only hurting the artist and potentially putting yourself at risk. i see a LOT of fanfic writers do this. this is not okay!! if someone copied and pasted your entire fic and submitted it to someone then your identity would be completely erased from it. no one would interact with your original post if they saw that one instead. and even if someone said “look at this (it’s not mine)” then you are still not getting any credit.

So stop reposting artists’ work w/o their permission and start sharing the links if you really want to express appreciation for it.
