Bridge Construction
Over the past few weeks, my partner Pat Antonelle and I have been working on our balsa bridge during provided class time, in addition to free time outside of school. Originally, we were trying to use the schematics we had for our USMA test bridge, however, we realized that the design would not have worked with the materials provided. So, we decided to go with a double truss design on the underside of the bridge, while constructing two railings on the topside of the bridge. We believe that the double truss design would be the preferable choice as far as functionality and durability. The two railings on top would provide for a safe, passable route for the matchbox car during testing. Despite multiple "speed-bumps" in our project, and a few remakes/re-dos, we are very pleased with our bridge and eager to test it out tomorrow in class.
While this video is terribly boring, it gives a real life example of what we learned in class today. While we were calculating the value of our awesome and limitless strength, we were doing things that scientists actually do for many of the things we use on a regular basis- most notably transportation. This also puts into perspective the gravity (lol physics pun) of how awesome the engines in our cars are, some of which reach 400 horsepower on a regular basis; as well as how insane it is that Usain Bolt is legally classified a human being.
