Terror on Planet Ionus by Allen Adler, cover by Jerome Podwil (1969)
Jerome Podwil illustrated the covers of some of the defining SF novels of the 1960s for Ace Books, including early editions of SF novels by Ursula K. Le Guin, and Samuel R. Delaney. Podwil is apparently still alive and painting as of this writing!
Allan Adler co-wrote (with Irving Block) the original story that became the SF classic film Forbidden Planet, and co-wrote (with Robert Abel) the original story for the SF not-so-classic film The Giant Behemoth. Of this novel, his only publication, esteemed SF critic Damon Knight wrote that it is "so bad that ordinary epithets will not do... incredibly, stupidly, loathsomely bad."
