Iowa Fact: the first robbery of a moving train was in Adair, IA by Jesse James in 1873.
(there were some earlier train robberies but this is the first where a moving train was derailed)
That’s so wild! Thank you!!
I know so much random shit about this state. Sioux City and Davenport used to have river pirates, and supposedly, there's still buried treasure in caves along the river. Des Moines had a topless lady car wash in the 70s. Decades ago, there was a serial killer landlord on the south side that left her elderly tenants on the train tracks when they couldn't pay. Reddit will tell ya that the most haunted place in DSM is Merle Hay Tower, but it's actually Broadlawns hospital. Cedar Rapids is called The City Of Five Smells for a reason. There's a bunch of ghost towns under Lake Red Rock. We've got sinkholes in the metro that city officials don't want the public asking questions about. The whole place is built on top of a bunch of old mines, and those mines are waking up hungry. I could go on, honestly.
You had me at ‘river pirates’.
Response to the Iowa trivia thing- Montgomery County LITERALLY lost their courthouse in the 1800s.
They were moving the county seat to Red Oak and didn't want to spend the money to build a new courthouse yet. So they hoisted the old wooden one-room building onto a wagon and hitched it up to some oxen. They just barely got to the outskirts of RO before the blizzard hit. Then men unhitched the oxen and ran for cover. In the morning, the courthouse was gone.
They didn't find it till the next spring, where the wind had apparently blown it onto my family's land. Decades later, my great grandpa found the old key while working the field. Musta fell out of the door at some point. It still had a label tied to the end with a bit of twine that said COURT.
Label's long gone, and so's the old wood courthouse, but we still have the key. It's a big black metal thing, about as long as my hand. Heavier than it looks.
‘How do you lose a courthouse?!?!’
‘You forget to cherish her’
“Is this Hell?”
“No, this is Iowa.”
Drove past that painting of Julian Dubuque recently, and my first thought was ‘why is there a mural of Vlad the Impaler in downtown Dubuque’
There, in the prairie, it waits.
It waits.
Look closer.
It’s gone.
