The New iPad. Too-Great Expectations?
Nobody owns the new iPad yet, and yet we're seeing posts of disappointment with the evolution of Apple's iPad revealed yesterday. No Revolution. Incrementalism. Fails to Surprise. Not so mind-blowing. I guess you really can't please everyone. So what's the fuss about?Let's look at some of the highlights;
Retina Display - 2048 x 1536 resolution. Better than 1080p... on a tablet.
4G LTE - Apple's first 4G device. No doubt 4G offers pretty impressive speeds (probably better than what I usually experience on my Wifi around the house), but it's very much suspect to availability/reliability of your mobile carrier of choice.
A5X processor - No big jump to quad-core, but a hardware bump with a quad-core graphics processor built-in to support all the pixely goodness.
Siri (ish) - Siri was the focal point of the iPhone 4S launch, and seemed poised to make its way across all iOS devices in time. Apparently that time isn't now. No full assistant, but integrated Siri dictation to take the work out of typing stuff.
Name - not the oft-rumoured iPad HD, or iPad 3, or anything else. Just the new iPad. A bit of a surprise in itself, and adds a but of clunky naming in their portfolio (so the "old" one is 2, and the "new" one is just "new"?)
iSight Camera - how or why people are comfortable using a tablet as a point-and-shoot camera I'll never quite understand... but a new 5MP iSight Camera will help those people to do it. And they can shoot 1080p video should they desire.
In addition to the above, we got to hear about updates to a host of apps from the iLife suite newly updated and iPad-ified. Oh yeah, and the delicious-looking new title in the Infinity Blade series. Maybe I've got my optimist hat on, but that's not a bad rundown of improvements to an already wildly successful product.
So why the fuss?
Apple's in a tough spot, I suppose. Victims of their own success perhaps. Apple can't possibly meet the expectations projected on them. Beyond keeping up with the Joneses and trying to keep a step ahead of the competition, they have to fight the hype factory of their own ravenous fan base. The rumor mill leading up to the big reveal was rampant with speculation and fantasy. Everything from edge to edge screen, the removal of the physical home button, a new 7" iPad Mini tablet, or haptic feedback screens. And what we walk out with, is a hardware bump and improved resolution.
Better resolution in the palm of my hands than I have on my couch watching television.
I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
If you don't have an iPad or have the original, then this should be the one to pick up. Is it enough to switch from an iPad 2 or another competitive tablet? I'm not sure.
For me, not having jumped on the tablet bandwagon yet, I'm excited about the new iPad. I may not be lined up on March 16, but I suspect I'll have one in my hands in the not too distant future.
Most of the specs and features on the new iPad lined up with what we expected to see. The Retina display, the upgraded camera, and the A5X processor were all rumored to be happening and then they did. What’s strange is that instead of calling it the iPad 3 or the iPad HD, Apple came forward and simply introduced the new iPad as the iPad. Will the next iPhone have the same fate?
Apple - iPad 3 HD Reviews
With the stunning Retina display, a 5-megapixel iSight camera, and ultrafast 4G LTE, the new iPad is brilliant from the outside in.
Apple's Philip Schiller unveils the company's newest iPad. The device offers a higher-resolution Retina Display and better camera. The pricing starts at $499 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model and 4G starting at $629.

iPad (3rd Gen): First Impressions.
So, Apple released a new iPad. Unsurprisingly its faster than the last version and has better specs in keys areas. I own the original iPad which is starting to get long in the tooth. I picked up an iPad 3 to give it a whirl and see how it compares to my 1st gen model. These are my first reviews after a few hours with the device at home.
The one line review would be: Great screen. doesn’t feel slow. It’s thinner, lighter and has a better case.
Getting set up.
The Packaging is simple to open and robust, the first start process takes you through a few screens before landing you on the home screen.
It took me a few minutes to get a few of my favourite apps installed. From opening the box to reading my RSS feed in reader was around 6 minutes.
First impressions
I tend towards using the iPad for media consumption. A mix of reading, web browsing and watching media streamed from the iMac. The new screen makes a big difference to all of these activities. Text is pin sharp and easier to read.
The increase in resolution makes a noticeable difference to the 720p video files i stream from the iMac. Colours are better and the whole picture is sharper.
The extra resolution in safari makes text and some screen graphics super sharp. However, images and other page furniture can appear blurry if its using an image. The blurry edge to text rendered as an image is very noticeable and distracting.
Compared to the Original iPad.
I skipped the iPad 2 as it offered little more than my original iPad. Skipping a generation has made the differences more pronounced. The screen improvement alone is worth the upgrade. Combined with the thinner and lighter form factor the new iPad is very compelling.
Wrap up.
A few hours in and the new iPad is making a good case for itself. It improves on my first generation iPad in almost every area. If you own a 1st gen iPad then it looks to be a worthy upgrade.
THERE. ARE. FOUR Gs.
...but for a moment, I thought it was a good idea to buy an iPad at Walmart last night.

Voice dictation might as well be the coolest feature of the new iPad. Watch the video below to see how well it works.
