IPC Media re-branded as Time Inc. UK
It was the end of an era last week as Time Inc. announced that it is rebranding its wholly-owned UK publishing arm IPC Media – which owns a huge back list of comic characters and comics – to Time Inc. UK.
“Our prime focus is growing our core assets in the United States and UK,” commented Time Inc. Chairman and CEO Joe Ripp. “We already hold leadership positions in both regions and this move will…

Sexism and IPC Media
According to IPC media, when it comes to music women don't matter and the only thing that women seem to be 'useful' for here, is for them to get their tits out. Furthermore it assumes 'heterosexual' male (I'm sure there will be lesbians out there who wouldn't mind reading Nuts?)
It's attitudes like this, which fuel stereotypes that women 'don't listen to music' and 'don't go to gigs'.
Sweet Female Attitude - Fight for that career with fitness
Being an unemployed female graduate is no lavish luxury, although Channel 4's Made In Chelsea may well have had us believing so with champagne breakfasts and meetings with the bank manager. Planning masquerade balls, lunch dates and private yoga classes isn't that high on the agenda in comparison to planning next week's budget, strategically buying make-up and becoming best pals with your CV. Give yourself a break from all the hassle of unemployment and boost your body back to brilliance.
The sorry state of affairs for young women between the age of 21-30 is no longer remotely reflected in the media and entertainment industries. Surrounded by reality TV that thrives from the young, rich, unemployed and sometimes idiotic only makes us feel worse about ourselves as we carefully select Sainsbury's basic gin for a Friday night in to protect our monthly pittance. Unlike TOWIE and MIC stars, we want to work for a deepened appreciation, work to earn the freedom of a column in Closer! Magazine, work to do the jobs we right now can only dream of.Waltzing into a job with Condé Nast once seemed an ideal prospect thanks to leading ladies, Anne Hathaway and Sarah Jessica Parker who boosted their glitzy careers sipping Cosmopolitan's and borrowing Jimmy Choo's. With graduate unemployment teetering on 25% its evident that no job is secure without a hell of a fight. And even if its secure, it's not permanent.
Everyone knows to be a candidate considered for a proper job you must have completed say 200 or more internships. With 90% of students voluntarily working in anticipation for their dream role at the end, interning is the new jobseekers trend. In saying this, for those of us that have interned on a hourly rate of experience, that have spent hard-earned money commuting for the opportunity to work in the money-making sectors, its time to leave the CV at the computer and work on some persona skills. There should be no looking back with nostalgia thinking what if id have took the editor to lunch and made more contacts? What if I wrote an extra piece on the governments support towards internships?(yeah right!) What if I had stayed for those extra two weeks they asked? Harsh reality, you didn't and to be honest it might have made no difference to the potential of a job. How do you get that independent woman attitude back and more than that how do you get employers to muster up the confidence to think - Yes, she IS my ideal candidate? Well, its pretty simple and psychological... By getting fit.
Studies in the Journal of Exercise Physiology show there is a positive relationship between fitness levels and employability (including employment satisfaction, employee's perceived productivity and absenteeism). Employers know the best assets to their company are their employees. Attitude and work-rate are key factors that are imperative to the maintenance of a well-structured organisation. Working in a busy, fast-paced environment allows employees to become prone to stress more easily. By beating your belly and busting out some weights, your positive energy may well just get yourself your next job. The study shown that 44% of the employees believed their exercise habits would increase had they access to exercise equipment surrounding or within the workplace. For us graduate women sitting on the sofa pining after totaljobs.com its time to give those jobs a break, release some happy endorphins and get fit.
Gym, what gym?
As we've established counting the pennies to pay for car insurance means belts are scarily tight and piggy banks are getting hungry for loose change. Joining a local gym can cost between £16 and £35 a month depending on where you go and what you are looking to improve. From personal experience £5 is probably the cheapest you will find per session. With home exercise regimes online and Zumba DVD's you can work out in the comfort of your own home sporting your favourite baggy sweats in front of the TV forcing the gym to be a blast from your past. So if you're struggling to keep finance flowing take some time in your lounge for a fun-filled workout. If socials your thing experiment with fitness classes at your nearest sports centre. Bokwah is big in this season said to be the new martial marvel combining African style dance, capoeira and kickboxing. Check out your nearest gym or sports centre for timetables and prices. Top tips are to keep a personal record of all your achievements. Weights, times, reps and sets are important records to sustain a good level of fitness. Set reasonable goals in the beginning, as you up your training begin to get tougher on yourself to increase your motivation. Who said you can't be your own personal trainer?!
Need a motivation boost to get up and go? Here's 10 reason's why :
1.Healthy hire. Improved fitness builds an improvement in your immune system meaning you are less likely to get sick and therefore look and are more reliable than candidates who do not exercise regularly.
2.More energy. One of the main benefits to regular exercise is sustained energy throughout the day. A body with maintained strength and conditioning allows your body to preserve energy and focus on the task at hand.
3.New found confidence. Individuals improve self-confidence because they have proven to themselves they can accomplish what it takes to obtain a certain level of fitness. It allows you to become more confident to perform tasks and thrive on bigger and better challenges (especially if you are new to focused fitness!)
4.Inspiring confidence. Confidence from you will bring out confidence in others and allow you to become a trusted and relied upon employee.
5.Set and achieve goals. Learning to set your goals and see them through to completion is a skill that is naturally brought into the workplace. An employee with the ability to set goals, realise those goals and then go on to achieve those goals is by definition an asset to the company.
6.Reduced stress. Regular exercise is proven to lower the levels of stress. Physical and emotional tensions can be broken by a 40 minute workout where time out allows you to rest, recover and reset your mind. Endorphins in your muscles are released allowing emotional and hormonal tensions to become relaxed.
7.Better attitude and better team-building opportunities. With fitness comes strength and endurance. Being able to work that extra hour with a can-do attitude will work wonders for your references and make your employer want to make you a keeper. Team activities and fun days allow your professional relationships to develop. What better way to discover new ways of working together than a cheeky game of softball with the boss. (If only things were that easy).
Music matters
Synchronize your workout playlists' beats per minute with your pace to up your performance. Listening to drum and bass, dance and electronic music has been shown to improve pace and performance especially during cardiovascular workouts. However, focusing on barbells, weights and kettlebells requires more concentration and intensity and therefore having no music is sometimes the motivation thats needed. Be sure not to have your nano clipped to your sports bra or it could be a very short story - hello broken nano, hello dropped barbell, goodbye brilliant workout.
Fast-paced is not for every woman out there. Sometimes you need your favourite cheesy tunes. If you hate working out at least you've got the Spice Girls blaring away whilst you rock out some retro sportswear. Like I said, its not for everyone. Try and test it. See how your tunes measure up at mixmeister.com. If thats not enough, losing weight has never been so easy. According to John Hopkins University you can lose weight by blasting out a bit of Beethoven when you eat a meal. Listening to classical music alters your concentration levels and makes you lower your eating pace. In doing so you consume less overall per meal, lowering your calorie intake and increasing your enjoyment of food. So post-workout swap those upbeat tempos for some orchestral masterpieces. Who knew SuBo (Susan Boyle) would sing our excess carbs to sleep.
Stretching is sacred
A good stretching session pre-workout will allow you to workout any kinks in your muscles and alter your program before you get in the gym. Stretching before a hard session will also allow you to maximise your performance overall. Supple and flexible muscles tend to work harder than muscles that are injured with built up scar tissue or excess lactic acid. If you are injured change the exercise and find exercises that will help you improve your injuries. Foam rolling before and after a workout will also help prevent further damage to muscle tissue. Stretching after resistant exercise can go as far as to triple your muscle strength showing how important strengthening and conditioning can be after exercise. Tiring it may be after a hard session but pull out that indomitable spirit and flex away.
So ... Will it work?
As a graduate anticipating a job in publishing, I'll let you know. 2 interviews so far this year and one Internship. In all interviews I have had I have been asked "what I like to do in my spare time?". My analysis, they want to know I'm motivated and they want to know I'm driven not that I like to go shopping and spending some quality time with friends (which I do!). Its questions like these that I hope will eventually pull me into the right job.
Yours truly.
