MBA coaching centers to decide IPL V format

A day after N. Srinivasan, BCCI President, announced the termination of the Kochi IPL franchisee, he has come up with a novel idea, which, he believes is going to take the business of sport a notch further - awarding IPL V scheduling contracts to MBA coaching institutes.

Says Srini - "We are quite aware of the confusion in the minds of fans last IPL, where teams had to play each team in their group twice, and every team in the other group once. Frankly, it needed a lot of explaining through graphs and pictures from tweeters and bloggers to make fans understand the format. This year, with Kochi gone, there are going to be just 9 teams, and we're breaking our heads about how to group the teams and decide upon a format."

"We did a lot of internal brainstorming, and one of the ideas involved grouping the 9 teams into 9 groups each, with each team constituting a group. And then we decided upon each group playing the other group in a home-match and away match. We nearly approved of the schedule when Rajiv Shukla pointed out that it was very similar to the IPL schedule during Lalit Modi's reign. An embarrassed Chirayu Ameen admitted he'd copied the schedule from the previous IPL. We promptly sacked him from IPL Chairmanship and made Rajiv Shukla the IPL Chairman."

"It was then that we decided to outsource the scheduling part to competent business houses, which have a long tradition of helping solve such problems. We have now decided to float tenders to organizations that are interested in finding out the total number of ways in which 9 unique teams can be paired, with each team playing each other atleast once and atmost 9 times. Our technical committee believes they used techniques like Per-Natesan and Kaambu-Kesan. Since the names sound very TamBrahm-ish, I as BCCI President, have given the green signal to the process."

TIME, Career Launcher, IMS and Byju's CAT Classes are among the top institutes to have submitted their Expression of Interest. A top official from TIME spoke on conditions of anonymity - "We have a great track record when it comes to solving permutations and combinations. All we need to to is frame the question in one of our Mock CATs, and we'll get the solution in less than a minute from our students."

Career Launcher however sounded skeptic. "Our approach towards P & C has always been to eliminate from the options given, back-track and solve the answer. Now as long as we have 4 or 5 options to choose from, I do not think we will be able to provide the BCCI a solution. However, we do not want be left out of the competition. We'll still be applying for the tender."

Byju Ravindran, known popularly to CAT aspirants as simply Byju, seemed relaxed and confident. "We always believe in simplicity. You just have to be clever to crack these types of problems. What we're going to do is eliminate Sahara Pune Warriors from our the problem, for ease of calculation. Adding them in the equation isn't going to change the results in any way imaginable. After that, it's just a matter of diving the teams equally into two groups. Beat that!"

Meanwhile, IMS has already started its operations on arriving at the schedule. "We're pretty confident we'll win the contract. We are going to offer very unique and innovative solutions apart from the obvious, like finding out the number of ways of dividing the Kochi Tuskers players into the remaining teams, such that one player is always included (Muralidharan) and one player is always excluded (Ravindra Jadeja)."

However, rumor has it that N. Srinivasan might favor Brilliant Tutorials, Masilamani Street, T Nagar, Chennai due to his bias towards Chennai.
