there’s one fandom in particular i’d like to commission a study on. like i wish a team could observe them for three years and carry out a scientific survey and publish the results, because this is a fascinating fandom
first of all, unlike many other fandoms with bitter and resentful and possessive fangirls, these mostly appear to be rather accomplished women. they have professional careers, they have long-term partners (the old-fashioned markers of contentment or happiness) and they seem to be level-headed and compassionate people because they take on other roles in life that typically suggest “this is a well-intentioned person”
my point is, they seem fulfilled. no apparent need to be assholes on the internet
and yet
even after they’ve come to know you (and they repeatedly tell you you’re awesome and so sweet etc etc etc) and they’ve taken up hours upon hours of your time telling you about their life, sometimes venting, sometimes essentially using you as a therapist, they’re prepared to insult you in mere seconds because you asked them some genuine and very legitimate questions about their fav celebrity
and you never hear from these people again
it’s astounding. can we commission a study? this is the most bizarre thing ever
i don’t know what you all do with your life, but when your day job consists of finding out how and why many civilians were maimed or killed in a particular event, trust me when i say nobody gives a fuck how a celebrity lives their life or what they wear beyond fun discussions on tumblr and a bunch of reblogs
next time someone asks me why we need feminism, i should remember to tell them it’s because of some fandoms
but i forget because... more important things are on my mind
