For the ask-meme! 4, 15, 17, 22? :D
4.) Have you ever thrown a book across the room?
Boy, have I! In particular I lobbed “A Game of Thrones” across the room about 2/3 of the way through. Long story short it’s everything I hate about contemporary fantasy writing crammed into one grimdark misogyny package.
Pretty sure I also pitched a Terry Goodkind book across the room for similar reasons, and I have a distinct memory of hurling some terrible horror novel I picked up at a used book store or something of the like. Can’t remember the name or the author but it was... it was bad. Like ‘did you even have an editor?!’ bad.
15.) What would you say has inspired you the most?
Spite. No, seriously. Be the change you want to see in the SF&F genre.
17.) Would you like your books to be turned into TV shows, movies, video games, or none?
Whatever paid the most. Probably movies? Possibly TV shows. If the adaptations were crap, oh well. At least I’d be financially secure for goddamn once.If I didn’t have to settle for whatever scraps they’d throw me for the rights and had actual creative input and/or some say over the casting (DON’T WHITEWASH MY CHARACTERS!!!!!!!) I’d be genuinely excited to work on a TV series of my stuff. Could do like a season per book if it works out like I’m anticipating with the pacing. Movies would be a little rushed. Video games wouldn’t work so well. Maybe an RPG that let you fuck about in the same world but like, a couple years before the Plot happens so you’re not caught up in Another Person’s Story.
22.) Do you start with characters or plot?
Characters. Characters are my strong point for sure. That and worldbuilding. Generally by the time I get a bit of work done on both character and worldbuilding, a plot suggests itself and I can build on it. Starting with a plot can make for a really tight, exciting read and I admire writers who do that... but it’s not how I approach things, it’s not possible for me to approach a story that way.
