President Ronald Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act (Simpson-Mazzoli Act) into law on 6 November 1986.

The act made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire undocumented immigrants, while also legalizing seasonal illegal immigrant hires, and provided amnesty for illegal immigrants who had been in the US before 1 January 1982 and who had no criminal record (it was estimated that 2 million would be eligible, more than 3.2 million were granted amnesty).
