The delegation from Israel, together with the American ambassadress, took measures to counter the resolution’s passing but Palestine’s President, Mahmoud Abbas, took firm steps in convincing other delegates to vote for the resolution. When the meeting did take place on the 29th of November, we began with discussions on the reports made by the General-Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and that of Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. On the former, the Secretary-General calls for cooperation from the international community for a free Palestinian state is established. On the latter, it was concluded that with the rights of the Palestinians being harmed by the conflict against Israel, the Security Council must ensure that the peace process is a success. Once both reports have been finished, the delegate from Sudan began to read and discuss the resolution. After the resolution was read, President Abbas of insert Palestine made his speech, calling for the international community to support and cooperate in ensuring the success of the peace process as they were running out of negotiating opportunities. The resolution met great opposition from the delegate of insert Israel, who claims that the resolution is one-sided and does not ensure the security of Israel or its people. Before any further discussions were made, the Minister for Foreign Affairs from Turkey called for a short unmoderated caucus. Afterwards, the representatives of Palestine and Israel reaffirmed their stand. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of insert Indonesia said that the international community must set things right and pay heed to the plight of Palestine. However, the Minister of Canada spoke in opposition while the Minister of Turkey held that the Palestinian plight has gone on for too long and it must be addressed quickly. Once the speakers have made their points clear, I spoke of the need for a comprehensive solution for Israel and Palestine to stay side by side and that the vote of each delegate should be done for the sake of peace. Ultimately, the votes were cast, with France, Greece, Indonesia, Sudan and Turkey in favor of the resolution’s passage, while the United States, Canada and Israel voted against it and Singapore, United Kingdom and Germany abstaining. After the votes have been cast, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon delivered his address, emphasizing his support for Palestine’s right to self-determination. With that, the delegates who voted on the resolution were made to explain the votes they have cast. Those who spoke were the United States, France, Singapore, United Kingdom, Germany and Greece. Once they have made their statements, the meeting was adjourned. Vuc Jeremic- President, General Assembly of the United Nations Source: UN Press. (2012, November 29).
