“Is it true, then?” Elain took a step forward, curiosity blooming in her brown eyes. “That you feed on blood?”

The creature looked at her and smiled, revealing far too many sharp teeth. What a beautiful little fawn. So full of curiosity and life.

She could hear the steady beat of Elain’s heart—not the frantic, erratic rhythm of a frightened animal, but something calm and sure.

“Why don’t you find out for yourself, sweet thing?”

Amusement flickered across Amren's face as she extended the goblet in one hand. She wondered whether the little fawn would run. Whether she would realize she had wandered into a monster’s den and flee while she still had the chance.

But she didn’t.
