4 Going Home [Fiction] As we came up to Saint Jane Avenue, I asked Mara if she could let me off at the cemetery. “I guess you are going to visit your parents. I don’t mean to overstep, but would you like some company?” Mara asked. It would be nice, but I wasn’t exactly sure what I might say to Mom and Dad, and if I couldn’t find words, well, empty silence would be embarrassing. Even more so in front of Mara; she knew I hadn’t visited in five years. “I appreciate your offer Mara, but I need some alone time with my folks.” Alone time…I didn’t really think my parents would hear me, but what would I say? I guess I just wanted to talk to them, like we used to. Tell them my hopes and dreams or the fact that I didn’t have any, my real fear. Even I knew that was f-ed up, but my doctor suggested just talking to their graves might help me. Mara gave me her number and told me to call if I needed anything at all. We hugged and I watched another part of my past disappear down the road. #ourtown #irisdement #towngoingdown #acousticguitar #acousticmusic #fingerpicking #storywriting #fiction #writersofinstagram #prose #cemetary #graves #changeandgrow https://www.instagram.com/p/CVxYC6ZFMgN/?utm_medium=tumblr
3 Going Home [Fiction] As we drove down Main Street Mara asked what brought me back for a visit to this town of my birth. “It’s my Mom’s birthday and though she passed years ago it seemed like the right thing to do. Everything in my world is just…well, off kilter.” Looking down and quietly to myself, I said “After the break down I hoped coming home to my roots might re-anchor me—bring back a piece of normal. (Shaking my head) I really need some normal. My family, my history…maybe it’s here. Realizing I had drifted, I shook myself out my moodiness. “Did you know my Mom shared the day with her mother?” “Really? It’s your grandma Nanny’s birthday, too!” said Mara. Pulling into the post office, she said, “I’ll be right back, Mark. Just picking up a package.” Sitting in Mara’s car with the sun streaming in I shut my eyes and thought about my Nanny. A melody, the same one that wouldn’t leave me alone since I arrived, continued to Karaoke in my brain, bouncing ball and all. And then lyrics started flowing across my closed eyelids. Nanny The oldest of a brood of nine, Back when farming needed the hands, She mothered early: Sisters and brothers working their parent’s land. Later with a daughter of her own, There’d be no brothers or sisters. But to Nanny’s little one, Came a million cousins of all ages, Sibling stand-ins. An aunt for a sister a cousin for a friend, Two uncles big brothers, All understudies through the end. I scanned my grandma’s old photos, A family on the side. Someone else’s’ memories I was too little. A family tree full of sprouted branches, Fruits out of reach, No more living guides. Is that Macy, is that Mae, Is that Margie, Russel, or Bessie? And without them who am I, Left gazing up, I can’t even say. ****** #ourtown #irisdement #towngoingdown #acousticguitar #acousticmusic #fingerpicking #storywriting #fiction #writersofinstagram #prose #changeandgrow https://www.instagram.com/p/CVnDzn8FHkO/?utm_medium=tumblr
