Color Change

It’s hard to be inspired by These dirty grays and muddy browns; Sagging leaves and busy towns With engines flying by. Those hues that were admired by A younger me with hopes unseen, Of purest blue and vibrant greens All disappeared and died.

Writer’s Bane

I’ve contracted Writer’s Bane, That curious affliction When one cannot put mind to pen, And struggles with their diction. It started as a minor pain, Thus causing a frustration- Those verses that I’d hoped would flow Have molded in stagnation.

I’ve searched for any remedy As now I’ve suffered deeply- For when I swallowed Apathy My symptoms worsened steeply. My writer’s soul cannot sustain A slowed imagination, Just as the lovebird cannot sing Without its inspiration.

I pray that I do not succumb, And find recovery- Though Writer’s Bane is not benign, It can’t kill poetry.

Fantasia

There is a symphony to be heard Away from the drowning of the street- Strings of the cricket and cicada, Horn’s howl of the great owl, Bellows of the bullfrog and toad, The percussion of leaves by my feet- All lost by the cars on the road.

Wayfaring

You were unabashedly cold; A driving wind on the mountainside. Each step with you was a chosen peril, And I counted them like a game. A smile was forced and heavy, Sunlight made a mockery. And you were nothing, and I was nothing, So together, we made a hole.

August 5th, 2017

I’m struggling because there is so much in my heart that I’ve wanted to pour out, but for some reason my instinct has been to distract myself from the burdens I’m carrying and the emotions I’m feeling, instead of embracing these things to create.  So for a long time now I’ve been doing well, on the outside. I’m working, saving up, cooking, visiting with friends. I’m doing all these things I’m supposed to do as a responsible person. But it’s eating away at me- that for so long, I haven’t written anything down.  I used to take my struggles and transform them. Now I sort of just... toss them in the corner of the room and keep them to myself. Now I have a pile of missed opportunities just taking up space.

Windowsill

In and out of consciousness, my faded sunlight flows; Trapped inside the windowsill, so back and forth it goes. Forsaken hues of gold and blues,  Forgotten with my virgin youth. In truth, I haven’t felt at all the sunlight in my skin; I see right past where I should go, but I am trapped within.

I’m here as a shadow Taking only half the space, I’ve sunk to the ground, hollow feeling In my bones, in my soul There’s such an ache- Eyes adjust to the dark And heart adjusts to bleeding, Afraid to show my face, in the open This is all our Reckoning Now Death will have his day.
