I’m Going In....

Okies, well, I’d mentioned afore my age and infirmities. And how it meant we’d to hire professional help in mending the rotten boards in the attic (which are threatening to bring down a ceiling panel in the kitchen) but, we havenae heard from the fella we asked to do the job.

So today myself and Alice will get up the ladder and go inspect the attic. At least that way I can see what needs done and if I have to, I’ll do it myself. (Things I’m not looking forward to: rat carcasses from the now dead rats: spiders, which I hate above all things. Sorry. I *know* they’re part of nature and all but I feckin HATE them. No wait, I’m not sorry. They look like evil alien life forms. And I’ve been bitten by them more’n once)

Yesterday though I got the window surround painted. I posted a Before in my previous bog post, so here’s the After. Bearing in mind I’m no professional plasterer and couldn’t get the stuff smooth to save my life, so I’ve gone for the “rustic” look. Alice is happy with it, and that’s what counts. And then I glossed it. :)

And then I tackled the airing cupboard..after I tackled a hole Rentokil missed! Gory details..having to remove rat droppings the size of raisins scattered throughout the cupboard and actual rat hair from one that had obviously been caught on one of the wooden slats rough edges coming down the hole up the top from the attic.

Tip I got from one of the Rentokil lads...if you find a mouse or rat hole, stuff it with Brillo pads afore filling it. They won’t chew through Brillo pads if they can help it! They use steel mesh and concrete to cover holes, especially the outside ones. That white patch is my repair. It’s where the oil heating pipes come into the kitchen from outside. I *really* want to use this airing cupboard though, because you can see they put a wee radiator in the back of it, so it’s lovely and warm, great for storing linen and towels. You can see the hole at the top where the rats were getting in from the attic in the next pic.

And after filling the other hole, I cleaned the cupboard and painted the ceiling and side walls of it, just white gloss which is easy wiped clean. And now I’ve a working airing cupboard, woot! (Yes, I am easily pleased. )

So aye, today, it’s up to the attic. I’ve poked my head through the trapdoor leading to it and across the sea of rat droppings, rat nesting materials and stuff, saw the hot water tank is unlagged. So if I can manage it today, I’ll get the lagging on the tank. Every wee bit helps. :) We also sent away for insulation as there isn’t any. The aim is just to make the house a wee bit more energy efficient. It already *is* a very cosy cottage (she says, remembering how shivery cold we’d be in the often sub zero temps back in north west Scotland, wearing jammies under our clothes, no central heating, just the open fire and noticing how mild it is  here by comparism, for which my auld aching bones are thankful).

But until I do that and take pics, here’s a prettier one...the view from our kitchen window. :)

This print measures 7 3/4 x 10 3/4 inches. This print display’s the Old bridge which was replaced with a single arched bridge in 1830. There is still a plaque dedicated to the old bridge on the spot.
