Why is Irkutsk listivyanka nerpinary niche on Tumblr. If you search "Irkutsk nerpinary" I'm literally the only blog that comes up 🙁
Justice for me, the only content of it is on YouTube and the videos are recorded on motorolas or from the 2000's. Or both..(did motorolas even exist then?????)
And it's still open and they preform everyday yet, still no new content. The most recent video I've found anywhere is from 2 years ago and it's only 23 seconds long
Irkutsk nerpinary will forever be my favourite aquarium with baikal seals in it.. I would say toba aquarium instead but they sadly treat their seals bad :((. Ive noticed that about a lot of aquariums up in the euro-asian area....Irkutsk nerpinary has one pool for performances, multiple medical and feeding pools, and 1 big pool for the 4 (?) Seals living in the aquarium!
Either way, I hope it gets more popular cause there's so many pictures of Winnie and the other seals on Pinterest, but they are quite hard to come across without the tag of the aquarium :((
Heres some gifs of Winnie and other seals that you have probably seen
Two lovely Baikal seals
I would love to learn more about the irkutsk nerpinary! I see so many people saying bad things without actually knowing anything. Is there anywhere you'd recommend for more info on them and their nerpas?
Hi! Thank you for the ask :)
The bad stuff I've heard is from ignorant people, like you said. They believe that all animals should be in the wild and that training them is abuse. All the seals are rehab seals who *cannot* return to the wild. The performance and photo op pools aren't their home. They have a medical pool and a large pool for the four seals that call the Nerpinary their home.
The seals also have schedules and they only perform on certain days of the week. Training the seals and giving them toys and instruments is actually very engaging and helpful for both the bodies and brains of the seals. The CEO is also a strong advocate against seal hunting :)
