Will was observing everything about . His pretty little fingers and toes, wrapped in a blue blanket, his breath - slow and peacefull. They’re parents almost cried - in fact, they cried a little bit - when Will unconsciously smiled when little Benny moved his hands in the air for a while, turning back to his sleep afterwards.
Will wasn’t the kind of brother that felt jealous of the other after his birth. At first, he was all around their mother, just to see how she treated him and took care of him, and also to observe his expressions and things he didn’t like.
After a while, Will was taking care of Benny almost by himself, and he got very protective about him, especially when he learned to walk.
They would do everything together, and Will never felt upset at all to cancel his childish appointments to stay whit his brother.
After their mother’s death, everything just turned upside down. Benny was still too young to know she wasn’t coming back - only five years old -, and Will, at his 9, was old enough not to cry in front of their father.
But the truth is that Will had the hardest time of his life in that moment. He’s always been too attached to people he loves. He grows strong roots of love inside him - even if no one notices -, solid, intense and quite like a wave forming far away, but never breaking at the coast.
When he lost his mother, it was like this big and solid wave broke right in front of him, taking his heart and all he lived for with it.
He got so confused and introspective, that he almost didn’t notice that Benny was right there, suffering too. Suddenly, he knew he had one more reason to live for, and then he just let the roots of his love for his little brother raise and grow as never before.
In the other hand, their father didn’t think the same way. He didn’t get addicted to drugs of anything like this, but he wasn’t the same man he was when his wife was with them. He did everything a father should do - left his boys at school every day, and picked them up too; always gave them money to buy candy; didn’t let them go to a party if it seemed weird and dangerous. But it wasn’t with care and love - it was just because it’s a roll of a father. Just it.
By the time they were old enough, Will couldn’t stand more of that. He just couldn’t live with that cold care their father gave them everyday after their mother’s death.
Benny just didn’t care - if Will was with him, he really didn’t care their father wasn’t caring enough.
And so one day Will told Benny he wanted to go to the military. He wanted something more, something he didn’t know what was, but that he claimed he would figure out and that was his chance.
Benny, as always, just said that it was ok only if he could go too. They have this thing unsaid but always kept between them: Will, even though is the big brother, always sick for Benny’s help and thoughts about some big decision he has to make; in the other hand, Benny almost always gets in with everything Will wants to do, not caring how dangerous or boring it can be - sometimes just because his big brother is doing and he wants to do too; sometimes because it’s his big brother and he doesn’t want to leave him alone. And sometimes because both the reasons, like in this case.
Will had his worries, but it turned out better than he could imagine. He knew the love he got for his brother - he loved him more than anything in the world; but when they got into training for military - and even more after that, when they went to actual missions -, he just became more aware of this strong feeling.
In every test they had difficulty on accomplishing, in every night they couldn’t sleep well because of some harsh training - in every of those moments he just could feel how much he was never gonna last a week in that place without Benny. Not because he couldn’t complete the training, but because the unspoken care and love each one provided to one another was essential to their survival.
Will never knew how to put that in words - that’s why he never did and Benny either, but both of them always understood. Because it was intrinsic to them, too obvious - and too precious.
There is always that moment when they were all covered in dirt, surround by the enemy, just trying not to get caught, and they just look at each other - just for a second -, and realize everything is going to be just fine. That somehow they’re going to get out of there, no matter what. Because they’re together. Because it’s them against the world. And it I’ll always be.
