Profiling in St. Louis

Today, the Department of Public Safety was informed about an incident that occurred around 3:50 a.m. on Sunday June 21, 2015 on the Scott Hall parking lot at XXXX Olive in downtown St. Louis.

A XXX student and her companion were approached by two unknown suspects on the parking lot. The suspects both brandished a weapon and demanded the student’s companion's wallet. The student's companion complied, and the suspects fled north on 13th Street. The student and her companion were not injured.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department was called and is investigating.

Both suspects are described as black males, 17-20 years old.  One subject is 5'11"-6' tall and the second subject is 6'2" tall.  Both are dark complected, wearing dark colored basketball shorts and one subject was carrying a drawstring backpack.  

In light of this incident, DPS would like to share some important safety tips.

Before an incident occurs:  

·         Walk with others whenever possible, especially at night.

·         Remain alert and aware of your surroundings.

·         Scan parking lots, sidewalks and streets for suspicious persons or activity.

·         Look confident and purposeful when you walk.

·         Report any suspicious activity or persons on campus to DPS by calling XXX-XXX-XXXX.

I took out the addresses and phone numbers, but I received this email this morning. Generally, during the school year, we get a few of these notifications a month. The description of the suspects is always the same. Young adult males, tall, and dark complected. Generally depending on the weather they’re wearing a hoodie or basketball shorts. 

Now, in downtown St. Louis we do have a crime problem, some of it is linked to heroine. Also, if you look at the statistical demographics as of 2013 the white alone population percentage was 43.5% (not including latino or hispanics) vs. the black population of 47.9%. Statistically that means there are more people with dark skin, so if you took the crime statistics of any city and mapped them according to race obviously you’ll have more blacks committing crimes than in other regions because more black people live here. This is ignoring cultural patterns, the event of white flight, and the poverty line in the city. 

Suspect description consistency has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with location and demographics, and also has nothing to do with police bias. Do you think if I went to school in New York they would always be white males?
