saladin is, of course, their surrogate father
they grow very attached to him and the only other people who can handle them without having them crying is radegast and jolder
skorri can handle them if she sings
they were both claimed by ghosts when they were roughly 1-2 years old
shaxx exhibited his powers much earlier than zavala but both eventually gain them around 4 years old
their village was destroyed by warlords around the same time they were claimed
the warlords had been looking for them, being tipped that there were incredibly young risen recently born there
they survive on their own for about a year before saladin finds them
he finds them hiding under a void sentinel shield shortly after dispatching a fallen patrol roaming around the area
he coaxes them out with some food and promises of getting them somewhere safe
it takes them approximately three hours for them to get incredibly attached to him
they are absolutely attached to each other and always hold hands wherever they go
the first time they ever got separated was during twilight gap when shaxx left to go defend the wall
they will still hold hands to this day and they don’t care what anyone thinks, it’s familiar and comfortable
if saladin has to leave them, he has to give them his mark because it has his scent and warmth and it keeps them calm ---- a security blanket of sorts
for the first couple years having them at the temple, they sleep with saladin because of his warmth
for a couple years after that, it takes them a while to fully adjust to the weather, having been used to being around saladin almost all the time, and they were miserable the entire time
also the first time they got sick and terrified saladin every time it happened
