The compliment is what throws her, head ducking and the side of her hand rubbing across her mouth to wipe away the once-in-this-lifetime grin that’d been spreading across her face. No, no it wasn’t just the compliment but the authenticity in his tone when he spoke. Like they just escaped a mold-filled hell and the only plausible thing to do next was to take note of her smile when both realized it was finally fucking over. 

“Yeah, well...” Remnants of her smile still lingered on her face despite her best, self-conscious efforts to smother it. Part of her still wasn’t too sure this was real. “‘Reckon I didn’t have much t’smile over before.”
