Irrintzi championship in Urnieta [the first lady was the winner, the second one, the runner-up].
Irrintzi (literally “neigh”) is the Basque yodel. It’s a high pitched and long trill that ends in laughter. Nowadays is thrown to show happiness, but it’s believed to have been a battle cry. Imagine being an invader and hearing thousands of irrintzis thrown at the same time, surrounding you in the woods.
Fun fact: in a room full of people talking, when anybody starts an irrintzi, silence will take the place and after the “laughter” everyone will start clapping. Any Basque can confirm you this ^_~.
