“Okay, for some god-unknown reason your mom decided I was the one most suited to keep an eye on you. Couple ground rules, okay?” Clint crouched to the girl’s eye level. “One. Don’t play with the TV remote, if you turn the captions off I don’t know how to turn them back on and I’ll have to call someone for help.” As he counted the rules he held up fingers and pointed when necessary. “Two. If Lucky’s wearing the vest he’s working and you need to leave him alone. Three, if that light comes up and the doorbell rings, and I don’t go to the door you need to come get me. Four. I know there’s a cord going from my alarm clock to my bed, leave it. It’s supposed to be there."
Clint reached to his ears to pull out his hearing aids, purely so Morgan could see them. “These are my hearing aids. They do exactly what they sound like they should, help me hear. If you talk to me, and I don’t answer, I want you to touch my arm or back and when I put them in call me stupid because I forgot I’m taking care of a literal child. Unless it’s first thing in the morning, I don’t sleep with them in. You are allowed to get into the bed if you’re having nightmares but don’t hog the blankets. Understand?”
He made a (mock) serious face and leveled her a look. “Now. Do you wanna go to the zoo, or do you wanna go see whatever the hell kid movie’s playing at the theater?”
