Thinking About That Dang ol' Prophecy Again

A'ight fuckers, I don't know how to preface this, I just have thoughts about the Prophecy and I wanna talk about 'em, strap in

(Warning: Deltarune spoilers up to Chapter 4 (obviously), long post, some wild speculation later in)

What do the Lightners Have? What can be Trusted?

A detail I haven't seen people talk about much is that the images that come with the words of the Prophecy are a Dark World exclusive. Up in the Light World, according to Catty, the holy words don't come with any pictures.

I mean, there, like, aren't any pictures, but like, IDK why, I just imagine him, as, like, cute!

And it's probably the same Prophecy, what with how it's described. Does this mean the images are a fabrication of the Dark World, and therefore can't be trusted to reflect the true meaning of the words? Not necessarily. Considering the images don't seem to change between the three Dark Sanctuaries, even though at least two of them have different creators with differing knowledge sets, I'm inclined to believe that they're legitimate. The Prophecy is said to come from "time and space", so the images are likely the same.

Is Susie Really the Second Hero?

YES. Like, without a doubt. The set of images depicting the second hero are undeniably closer to Susie than anybody else, especially Noelle. That's a Rude Buster, and I don't see any horns!

I understand the confusion; individually, each of the images are just vague enough to sow doubt in the player's mind, and make them brace for the twist that it actually isn't Susie... only for the real twist to come in swinging: the Prophecy sucks actually, and Susie wants nothing to do with it once she learns how it ends. That's the twist.

AND LAST, WAS THE GIRL. AT LAST, WAS THE GIRL.

As for this thing's text, I don't think it's implying a second "THE GIRL" among the heroes. I think it's a misplaced segment from elsewhere in the Prophecy, much like the rest of the panels in the Second Sanctuary. Because when would the second of three heroes be last?

How about in order of allegiance? Despite being the second hero, Susie was the last to properly join the cause, and the scattered excerpts of the Prophecy that we see imply more pieces depicting the entire Deltarune journey.

Alright, What the Hell are These Things About

GALLERY

ROOTS

These two excerpts are... weird. Their passages are single words, their images are particularly abstract. My best guess for their meaning comes from the soundtrack.

We have one track just called "Gallery", and we have "Digital Roots" and "BIT ROOTS", which share a unique leitmotif.

"Gallery" plays before fighting three of the four main bosses of the game. The GALLERY excerpt is in a room on the beaten path.

"Digital Roots" plays in Queens basement, the location of the Spamton NEO secret boss fight. "BIT ROOTS" plays in the last dungeon of the Sword Route. The ROOTS excerpt is in a hidden room who's entrance also goes to Chapter 4's Egg Room.

On some abstract level, "GALLERY" represents Deltarune's story path, while "ROOTS" represents the game's secrets and optional encounters, creating a dichotomy between the two.

...That's all I got. Maybe we'll actually visit a gallery and that house in the woods at some point, but that's speculation.

The Worlds Being Saved is Not a Given

Most of the Prophecy is either predictive or descriptive, factually stating events that simply will happen or describing notable figures. Lancer will say "Toothpaste Boy", the Knight will duel the heroes, these are the conundrum's notes, the third hero is the Prince, and so on.

There are, as far as I can tell, two notable exceptions.

IF FOUNTAINS FREED, THE ROARING CRIES. AND TITANS SHAPE FROM DARKENED EYES.

This passage, "main2" in the files, covers what Ralsei did at the end of Chapter 2: if too much darkness is released via an excess of Dark Fountains, The Roaring will occur, and presumably lead into all that disaster and certain doom he also mentioned.

But interestingly (Unlike Ralsei, whose descriptions made it sound like the Roaring was all but guaranteed to at least come close to fruition), this passage isn't predictive. It's informative. This isn't something that will or won't happen, it's something that could happen, should its requirement be fulfilled.

The Roaring happening - or not happening! - is entirely within the perview of the Prophecy. Play our cards wrong, and fate won't save us.

And take an angeldamn GUESS where the other exception is.

ONLY THEN, WILL THE WORLDS BE SAVED.

Only then. Only if the Final Tragedy is allowed to proceed will the Prophecy have a happy ending. If it doesn't... then it won't.

The Prophecy seemingly has two built-in endings... although one of them might not count as a proper ending game-wise, rather being a fail-state similar to when we give up on the GAME OVER screen. "To save the worlds, there is only one way", after all.

Speaking of which...

Predicting the Final Tragedy with the Power of Slant Rhymes

Okay, so, a lot of the Prophecy is written in rhyming couplets, right? Easy to spot, not that noteworthy.

What IS noteworthy is this instance of a rhyming throuplet.

THE FIRST HERO. THE CAGE, WITH HUMAN SOUL AND PARTS!

THE SECOND HERO. THE GIRL, WITH HOPE CROSSED ON HER HEART.

THE THIRD HERO. THE PRINCE, ALONE IN DEEPEST DARK

Yes, "DARK" is not a proper rhyme with "PARTS" and "HEART", but they all have that "are" sound in them. It's a slant rhyme, and the Prophecy is no stranger to them.

AND THEN. WHEN ALL HOPE IS LOST FOR THE TALE

THE FINAL TRAGEDY UNVEILS.

Point is, I think the panel at the end of the Last Prophecy - the one Susie smashed - might also be in a (slant) rhyming throuplet with its neighbors.

TO SAVE THE WORLDS, THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY.

ONLY THEN, WILL THE WORLDS BE SAVED.

"WAY" and "SAVED" both have that pronounced "a" sound in them, which narrows down the number of words the Final Tragedy can end on quite a bit.

That's a tool I'm sharing with the class. Now...

My Current Guess at the Final Tragedy

And I do mean current; I'm not 100% sold on sticking to it as a headcanon, it's just an idea I had.

Drumroll, please...

THE GIRL'S LOVE MUST MEET ITS GRAVE.

The accompanying image would be something like an indistanct figure with a blade through its broken heart, to parallel the "LOVE FINDS ITS WAY" panel.

I think this about fits the bill for what we know about the Final Tragedy: something that would make Susie immediately smash it and turn on the Prophecy, forsaking all the self worth and hope it gave her without a second thought, but vague enough for her to not allude directly to it in her speech afterwards.

I say vague, because while the audience's assumption would be that "THE GIRL'S LOVE" is Noelle, as @deepfrieddeltarunememes has pointed out, Susie herself might not be sure if it's Noelle or Kris.

And this doubles as a really fucked up potential explanation for Kris's promised role in the conspiracy: Kris is deliberately pushing themself to fall in love with Susie so they can take the bullet for Noelle in whatever contrived circumstance that puts the "LOVE"'s life in the way of saving the worlds. It would explain a strange double-standard I've noticed, where despite distancing themself from Noelle (and everyone else tbh), they're almost fully indulging in their friendship with Susie, despite how badly the reveal of Kris's true allegiance could hurt her.

Like, god, imagine how fucked of a reveal that would be. Their love, no matter how genuinely felt (And it would need to be genuine to fit the bill), would be forever tainted by the fact it was a coerced effort.

Forced, you could say.

I have some other nasty ideas on how Deltarune might "end" (The Normal Route ending, at least, I think there'll be a True Ending but I have less of an idea on the specifics there), but that's a story for another post. For now, enjoy the twisted mental image of Kris trying to incept themselves into falling in love with their bully so they can die to protect their estranged best friend, under the coercion of said friend's terrifying mother.

Girl I need to know your feelings about Ahsoka. I genuinely don't know how I feel so I need to borrow someone's opinion and at this point brilliant character deconstruction is like your job around these parts.

boy do I have a story for you. Back in the day I was invited by Disney (it's a very, very long story) to watch ep. 5 release of the Ahsoka show in a select US theater.

And I tried to tell Disney "ma'am, I have not watched your show. I wouldn't know what's going on." Long story short I ended up going anyway and was of course hella confused the whole time. But it was also fun, I met a lot of passionate people, I got a wager going where we placed bets on how long it would take Anakin to mention Obi-Wan's name (even non shippers are very aware of the obsession). I won of course cause this crowd has taught me better - thank you btw 🙏🤣

What that episode confirmed for me is that Ahsoka does not make sense outside of the context of the clone war. She was created specifically for that period of time and should have died before Anakin became Darth Vader. Ariana Greenblatt is leagues above Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, not because she's a better actress, but because Ahsoka was written to be a teenager and anything other than that is just sad and redundant. It's clear she does not belong, she's a relic of an old era.

More than that, she creates a problem within the franchise as a whole that I simply cannot forgive - her existence post clone war diminishes Luke.

I am a huge prequel apologist, I'm not immune to nostalgia, I know those movies are fucking hilarious - unintentionally - but when people judge them, the first question they should be asking is if their existence ruins the original trilogy, and more importantly, Luke's exceptionality. Which, they most certainly do not. If anything, they elevate it, knowing the depth of Anakin's wickedness of which Luke most likely learned between episodes and at the end of the day, he still went: I don't care, I just want my dad to come home.

And this is the problem with Disney releases. Almost everything they put out has some sort of tie to order 66 and the deeper we go, the more we learn about just how many motherfuckers survived and so I ask: if there's so many Jedi, if there's Ahsoka, freaking Lady Terminator over here - why exactly is a whiny farm boy with no training so important to defeating the Empire? No one knew Luke would take the high road and win the day with the power of love, if anything, everyone encouraged him, including his own sister, to kill Vader. So..???? Ya know??

TLDR; I love Ahsoka. She's great. She's fun. She's a shared custody baby of Mr. Anxiety and Mr. Xanax. But she doesn't make sense outside of that world. Her journey should have ended during the siege of Mandalore. Imagine now much more heartbreaking (and sensible) it would have been if Ahsoka was rushing to get to Anakin to tell him what Maul had told her - which is essentially everything - only to get stuck in hyperspace and get shot by Rex. Alas, she learns everything and never even bothers to tell anyone. It's very out of character and just a huge contrivance to keep the rots intact.
