You are aware there's an even simpler method, right? After you create the text and transparent layer, click "Create Path from Text" in the text editor. Then go to your transparent layer before clicking Select > From Path. The text should light up. Then do the Grow command, take the fill bucket, go onto that transparent layer, and fill the highlighted area in. Super simple stuff.

Oh yes! That's great! I never thought about doing that. Also, I didn't learn about 'Paths from Texts' until I did this:

And hopefully the obvious reason for why you need to put text on a path shows.

I do like the method of deleting the excess on the layer as I do use a laptop and typically use the track pad. If I had a mouse, filling in the background would be easier. But it's all personal preference.

But YES, this is a GREAT way to do it too!
