“Unity in Diversity”
DETAILS...
Here are close up details of my piece created in response to three of the artist commissions here at Bold Tendencies. (2017) Inspired by Isaac Olvera’s wigs, Simon Whybray’s ‘hi boo, i love you’, Richard Wentworth’s ‘Agora’ and Ewa Axelrad’s lions. I have taken elements from each of their pieces of work, but have added my own twist, which is also befitting to my own personal culture, as well as the culture surrounding the area of Peckham.
I’ve always loved the emblem of the lion head and all the representations that come with it, so I wanted my piece to have this icon at its core. Where Isaac has used Mexican hair, I have used my own hair (from my hairbrush) to create a stunning effect and indication of hair. Over the course of the weeks I’ve observed the hair and it has gone from being pin straight, to wavy and now to curly. With my hair texture being curly, it has given an afro effect to the lion, which I think looks awesome and find aesthetically pleasing.
I have included Wentworth’s ‘Agora’ piece in the background, as well as kept the piece enclosed within a bubblegum pink colour, representative of the enclosed pink staircase, as both things have resonated with me throughout my placement. I have also used a sky blue within the lions face, to capture the surrounding area, and to lift the viewer’s gaze to the sky, as does being here on the rooftop.
