I will Harden You to Difficulties

I will Harden You to Difficulties

“Fear not [there is nothing to fear], for I am with you; do not look around you in terror and be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen and harden you to difficulties, yes, I will help you; yes, I will hold you up and retain you with My [victorious] right hand of rightness and justice’ (Isaiah 41:10).

Luistert naar Intuïtie

In het kleine, zeer kleine Taganga is in een week zodanig veel gebeurd dat het om is gevlogen. Nadat de bedbeestjes in het ene hostel me naar het andere hadden gejaagd, ontmoette ik een stel Duitssprekende en lieve mensen die mijn nieuwe hobby met minstens zoveel plezier als ik beoefenen. Daarom deelden we niet alleen de gevangen vis maar - in geval van nood - ook onze zuurstoftanks met een warm hart met elkaar. Een Europese bakker als onze stamhut (met Zweeds volkorenbrood waar je bij een gebrek aan vezels in drie happen genoeg hebt voor de hele dag!); we hebben het heel erg goed gehad.

Bij aankomst in het kustplaatsje - wat welgeteld 20 straten telt - werd ik gewaarschuwd om ’s nachts niet alleen over straat te gaan en als het moet, dan alleen de drie hoofdstraten aan te houden. Ik loop al wat langer op dit continent en houd het ‘niet alleen over straat gaan wanneer de zon onder is’ als een gouden regel aan. Taxi’s zijn goedkoop en dus geen reden om dwaas te doen.

Na een poolparty met uitzicht over zee kreeg ik opeens een sterk gevoel van ‘naar huis, nu’. De groep bood weerstand en vertraagde mijn vertrek maar na wat aandringen werd de pas ingezet richting strand; zijn wilden door feesten en ik kon in die hoofdstraat een taxi aanhouden. ‘Feest toch mee’, 'loop anders over een uurtje met mij naar huis’, 'laten we als groep samen blijven’. Het duurde alsnog even voordat ik mocht gaan maar op het moment dat de taxideur dicht gedaan wordt en de chauf met een u-turn de weg naar mijn hostel inzet, wordt bij de ingang van Sensation een tik uitgedeeld, een fles op iemands hoofd kapot geslagen en breekt er een intens gevecht uit waar ik gelukkig niet te veel van heb gezien. Wat ik wel zag was eenzelfde beestachtige woestenij zoals in Buenos Aires en - wederom - stonden de uitsmijters erbij te kijken.

De taxi reed door en bracht me zonder gezeur thuis voor een normale prijs, waar ik midden in de nacht m'n tas kon inpakken.

Een van de mannen kwam een uurtje later terug en vertelde me dat de politie hem aanhield, fouilleerde en de inhoud van zijn broekzakken hem afnam, inclusief zijn geld.

Toen ik wakker werd vertelde m'n buddy dat de rest van de groep onderweg naar het hostel door gemaskerde mannen met messen onder druk werden gezet hun geld en telefoons te overhandigen.

Some space to breathe!

Our next major theoretical exam is less than 48 hours away and I still have two pending papers to edit on top of my 1-inch thick review materials for Patho (and majority of which I haven’t read yet!). This has been my busiest year in medical school so far and at times I would really get exhausted! But praise God, the strength I am having now is already not my own, but His.

It’s been two months since I started living alone and I must say it really needs some getting used to. In a country where the culture nurtures hiring people to do household work for you, handling the “perks” of being alone such as cleaning the house, doing  the laundry, and cooking your own meals really serve as a challenge. Well, especially for me! I have never been this so independent in my 23 years of life.

But God has been cooking for and showing great things to me in these past weeks. I could hear Him better and I could see His hands clearer. Sometimes I would just sit in a corner and a thought would pop and I would end up either crying for forgiveness or praising Him for what He has done.

The Lord is amazing.

The stress in school is skyrocketing lately, but I am really glad that my supply of joy is being renewed day by day. Mercies for me are new every morning!

In times like this, nothing gives me real peace other than the assurance of God’s help. In this verse, He refers to the people of Israel, but this same promise is also real for me. We are very much like the Israelites anyway. Aside from being humans like them, we are also always wayward and falling short of glory. No wonder the Israelites are the epitome of the Christians in the modern day; for they were most of the time a disappointment, a nation which preferred disobedience, but then the LORD showed compassion on them and loved them truly, anyway.

I rejoice in Isaiah 41:8-14, ESV.

8 But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, zwhom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, amy friend; 9 you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called bfrom its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; 10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with cmy righteous right hand. 11 Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish. 12 You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all. 13 For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.” 14 Fear not, you worm Jacob, you men of Israel! I am the one who helps you, declares the Lord; your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel.
