I Shot Andy Warhol is a 1996 film about Valerie Solanas’ and her relationship with Andy Warhol. Solanas went to Warhol’s factory on 3 June 1968 and shot him and art critic Mario Amaya, she also attempted to kill Warhol’s manager Fred Hughes. All victims survived, however, Warhol had long lasting medical issues afterwards, which ultimately contributed to his death 1987, aged 58. Solanas gave herself up to authorities not long after committing the crime. Solanas was a writer, she lent something she wrote to Warhol and didn’t have a copy of it and was upset after he lost it. She was sentenced to prison and died in 1988, aged 52.

I Shot Andy Warhol was made by Canadian director Mary Harron and John Cale of Velvet Underground wrote the music featured in the film. The casting and acting in this film are brilliant, Lili Taylor stars as Valerie Solanas, Jared Harris was fantastic as Andy Warhol and so was Stephen Dorff as Candy Darling. The film also stars Martha Plimpton, and Justin Theroux. The film initially was going to be part of a documentary; but was later than turned into a film. If you like true stories, you will like this. There’s been many films about those connected to Warhol such as Valerie Solanas, Edie Sedgwick, and Basquiat, but there has never been a film on Andy Warhol himself. It’s unfortunate.
