Pinoy Hoops: Tamaraws’ Passion

Aside from playing Defense of the Ancients, most commonly known as DOTA, boys also love playing sports especially basketball.  It is a sport popular especially in schools, and competitions are held for the students who are basketball players in their schools.

San Isidro Parish School’s (SIPS) basketball players are among the millions of people around the world who love to play basketball. 

  History

Before, the SIPS basketball team was called “Warriors” and was changed into “White Cubs” which represented the young students with good characters.  Today, the said team is famously called “Tamaraws” which stands for the farmers.  In connection with the school’s name, the farmers’ patron saint is Saint Isidore who is the patron saint of the school.

  Tamaraws was founded by Mr. Virgilio Godinez in 1996.  Mr. Godinez is the all-time coach of the team from 1996 up to the present.

  “Dili mag-matter sa achievements. Ang importante nako kay ang love and passion to basketball.  (Achievements do not matter to me.  The most important things are the love and passion to basketball,” said Mr. Godinez.

  Mr. Godinez showed his love and passion to basketball by teaching and training the players of his team with or without payment.   However, he also has rules for his players.  One rule is when one fails in the two subjects, he will be removed in the team, but if he recovers, he can come back and play again. 

  Games

The team participates in competitions such as Mandaue City Athletic Basketball Association (MACABA), CEAP Private School Basketball Game, Unit Meet, Milo competition, Cebu City Olympic, Private School Development League (PSDL), National Basketball Training Camp (NBTC) and Cebu Elite Basketball League.

  All their endless efforts, sacrifices and time in practicing basketball every after class and even on weekends paid off for they are this year’s champion in the Unit Meet and fourth place in PSDL.

  “I want to represent our school’s name and honor it,” said Joshua Riner Ramas, the team captain of Tamaraws. 

  When asked “what is basketball for the Tamaraws?”,  they all shared the same answer: “Basketball is my passion and inspiration.
