ISKLETOR - BLACKLISTMIX004
iSkeletor - Gallows
Thomas Eskiturk's Track Of The Day - 00041
Sat 17th January 2015
Iskeletor’s debut album is everything you need from a Turkish beat tape, and much more. There’s lots of dub, lots of hip hop, a fair amount of (8 bit and organic) noise, a bit of Turkish music, a bit of trap, a bit of psychedelia, a bit of ambient. Iskeletor aka Istanbul-based Kerem Sevinçli is clearly schooled in hip hop (sampling), dub (effects), post-dubstep/dubstep (mood-setting) and experimental electronica (layering, collaging, noise, unexpected turns), and uses all his influences to mold a highly idiosyncratic sound. He uses drama and dread where necessary, but overall this is a pretty fun album, and dense enough for rewarding multiple listens.
Iskeletor’s S/T is out on Boomarm Nation, the label of El Mahdy Jr., to whom Iskeletor is something like a lighter counterpoint: they use almost the same elements and processes, but where El Mahdy Jr. is dark and political, Iskeletor is just plain fun. (That is not to say either one is better than the other.)
