“Ten years later, the island still smells like home, and Asa still feels like the one I never meant to leave behind.”
Summary: She swore leaving the island, and him,was only temporary. A decade later, one weekend back might wreck every plan she’s made since.

I notice him immediately; leaning comfortably against the side of the bait shop like he belongs to the island more than the shop itself. My chest does this ridiculously familiar skip. He’s broader now, taller, not the little boy that I left behind; Not on purpose, never on purpose. Ten years ago, sticky with melted popsicles stuck to our hands, we made a pact: if one of us ever left, the other would follow. I broke it first.
He steps forward pushing himself off the entryway of the bait shop. Disheveled curls sticking out from underneath his cap. A lazy smile makes its way to his eyes, easy like time hasn’t passed a minute. My chest skips again. I cross the gangway trying for a casual — obviously nervous “still keeping the gulls fed?” I squint raising the sunglasses from my eyes my smile widening.
“Somebody sure has to.” His voice is familiar enough to sting.
The rope swing from the shore flashes through my mind, the sunset, the hammock. Us.
I came back for a weekend. At least, that’s what I told myself. But the second Asa smiles, I feel the truth settle like sand in my shoes: leaving again might not be as simple as buying a return ticket.
He holds his hand out gesturing to my bags. I smile, grateful for the way he’s still so..him. “Thank you” I let slip as I pass off my bags to him; my pinky touches his in what feels like slow motion. It burns like a flame to a match, like every memory flashing through my mind at once. I know it will be just as hard to leave this time.
“So how long are you on the island for?” He asks, a half smile that says he doesn’t want me to leave either.
“The weekend,” I finish shortly. Too uninterested in hearing about the depth of my stay. “ Does Lena know I’m in town?” I perk up excitedly. He grins wildly taking his cap off and running his fingers through his hair all in one motion. “ Does she know? She’s basically foaming at the mouth in excitement. ” he cackles loudly. My own laughter rumbles through my chest.
“You told her?!” I squeal, thrilled that his mother is just as overjoyed to see me.
He halts to a stop taking a moment to turn toward me. He reaches out to place a gentle hand on my shoulder — It feels like the weight of the world with our past.
“Of course, I told her. I’m excited to see you too. I didn’t express it back there but I am.” My breath catches in my throat at his words.
Simple but reassuring in the thousands of thoughts caught in the whirlwind of the mess I call a brain. We begin walking in a comfortable silence after exchanging a look with one another.
The gulls circle as we walk. The smell of the salt still lingers in the air, but it’s mixed with the stronger scent of him. Cedar wood and spearmint gum make their way to my nose, familiar and fresh although it’s new. It’s entirely him that it feels like I’ve experienced it a million times.
We finally come across his black Toyota Tacoma, a vehicle I didn’t expect him to drive but it suits him. “This you?” I ask pointing to the obvious, and he nods. I saunter around to the passenger side practically jumping just to reach the handle. “You got it?” He chuckles lightly causing me to snicker as I hoist myself into the truck. “Oh, I got it,” I shout confidently finally making my way up and, into the large brown truck seats. I pull the buckle tight across my waist and give him a thumbs-up to signal my success with a huff.
He steps up into the truck casually like it’s the easiest thing he’s ever done, his six-three stature making it less than a breath to him. I roll my eyes playfully “show off.” I fake a cough as I beam brightly at him. Beyond happy to be back. The rest of the drive is filled with small talk. Questions as simple as how is an old friend, to the fun things I want to do while I’m on the island for the weekend.
“You.. Want to go cliff jumping?” He asks quizzically as I nod. “Why wouldn’t I?” I turn toward him in my seat crossing my legs over one another.
“Well, you weren’t exactly fearless when we were younger.” He chuckles. My hands fly to my chest in mock offense “Oh how dare you, I’ll have you know I jumped off the rope swing on Driftwood Cove just about every day of the summer when we were kids!” He breaks into an exaggerated gasp “Okay okay, you're right, I remember.” I can’t help but laugh with him.
I rested my head against the window as the truck hummed toward the cliffs. Salt air curled through the open vents. I told myself I was here for a weekend, but the island had already slipped under my skin like it had never let go.
Writers note: this is extreme short but it’s a new story I’m starting. Before I get chapter one out I’d like to see how it does and if others actually want to read! Let me know your thoughts and if you want to read more!
