JUHANNUS - MIDSOMMAR - MIDSUMMER
Last Friday, we enjoyed a wonderful Juhannus evening. I made a cocktail to sit and nip from around the campfire.
I used the @kyrodistillery Dark Gin mixed with cloudy apple juice, over ice, with an apple slice as a garnish. Simple, but absolutely delicious!
Later that evening, we also made some makkara on the campfire. How did you celebrate?
Day 3- may 25, pt1 We took a nice adventure stop at Isokyrö for a tour of the award winning Kyrö gin and whiskey distillery!
1. Funnily enough, we saw the company’s cards at the lunch restaurant, before us Canadians even knew we were even visiting the distillery. 2. We actually didn’t know what we were doing at all, until we pulled up to the drive way!
3. The story behind this ad: it’s illegal to market hard Liquor such as whiskey or gin in Finland, so instead they market butts. This is the five founders of the company, running through a rye field. Apparently not a recommended activity for men, because the rye is just at an… uncomfortable height.
4. It’s the seal of approval!
5. Learning about how whiskey is made! 6. 3000 euros for a small barrel, 6000 for a large.
7. This entire company is rye based - first rye whiskey in Finland, rye gin, rye spirits, etc. Also won best gin in an international competition, which is impressive for a company that started out making whiskey.
8-9: the best part about the side tour: gin tastings! I apparently have no sense of taste or smell, since it all just smells like varying degrees of formaldehyde. Still pretty cool though!
