The Blair Witch Project
I've finally seen The Blair Witch Project. I just know that it would of made a much bigger impact on me had I originally seen it in 1999 but upon watching things like Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, Cloverfield, Chronicle and a ton of Slender Man vlogs before it the whole thing seems very dated now.
Most noticeably, a lot has been done to improve on the "found footage" genre since then, like taking care to have plenty of still moments in order to not make your audience nauseous with motion sickness! I've never had a problem with Cloverfield but I definitely felt dizzy during Blair Witch due to all the uneven ground that Heather has to constantly walk and run over.
Film makers have also learned that if you are going to make a horror movie don't have your famous movie actually be about three people who scream constantly at rocks, sticks and each other for an hour and a half and only have something scary happen in the final five minutes! As the years pass that ending is going to look more and more anti-climatic and the cries of, "Is that it?!" are going to increase in number!
I am glad that I can finally tick it off my "Movies I Must See In My Life Time" list but it is going to become more and more underwhelming and unsatisfying as time passes and better found footage movies are released. I suspect that the only thing I'll remember from the movie later will be Heather's iconic close-up of apoligising to the camera and the end with Mike standing in the corner of the cellar -the only things anyone seems to remember from The Blair Witch Project.
