If you truly believe you should be able to control how people veiw and consume your art, then perhaps you should reconsider posting it online. If you are so sensitive that you cannot even handle it when someone expresses their admiration and relation to it, then why are you even posting it?? If it's so private and personal, why post it to a public space?? It's like putting your art in a gallery and then getting upset when critics put their word out about it.
I’m really tired of the ‘If you post it online its free for people to do whatever they want with it’ argument. Mainly because its just a cheap excuse made by the same people who dont give a damn about artists. Its just their way of excusing their nasty behaviors so they can steal and utilize another person’s work without any consequence.
Look most of what your saying has absolutely NOTHING to do with the very simple concept of ‘if someone asks you not to do it...then dont do it’.
If you were to start poking someone and they ask you to stop, then you stop. You dont stand there and say “well you should be grateful I’m even acknowledging your existence by poking you.” or “its just a joke, if you dont wanna be poked you shouldnt leave your house” or “My poking is a sign that I love you so you should appreciate it” That would be utterly ridiculous.
This isn’t about admiration and people’s relationship to another person’s art, its not about criticism, its not about private and public space even. Its just respecting people when they ask you not to do a thing. Its that simple. You can throw all these red herrings around but it just comes down to the fact that you want to consume someone else’s material without giving a damn about the actual person behind it, and thats pretty shitty.
Also dont forget that the internet is the main medium for getting artists noticed. It is the primary way to get get commissions, freelance, jobs, and in general make a living. In this day and age its not really a choice, artists HAVE to use it if they’re going to make money off of their skill. So its a little annoying when people use that to their advantage to do whatever they want.
And the thing about art is that its all gonna be personal in some way. My characters and stories come from my personal experiences, thats what gives them heart and thats what makes them relatable. That does NOT mean I want someone claiming those experiences as their own. Its one thing to relate to something and say ‘man I felt something similar’ but its a completely different thing when you just say that its yours. No, its not you, this is not your experience, this is not your art, this is not your effort. So dont be a cheapskate and try to snake someone else’s work for your own convenience.
