Having to find out who you are as a person after years of struggle is a trip.
Maybe it's just me but when i joined the discord, i feel left out. My messages would always get buried in the back without interaction and i can't really blame people when they reply to their friends because they were there first. I tried to read some chats but it's full of inside jokes i cant relate and it's hard to keep putting myself out there where there's this group of small people it feels like a clique. Sorry to be a downer.
To be entirely blunt, joining any established group of people is always going to make you feel left out at first. When a group of people are used to each other, they have a rhythm and inside jokes and fast friendships already formed, and that’s just the way it goes. If you want to be a part of a group, the best things you can do are listen and engage. Like I said in the other post, friendship goes two ways, and people are always going to turn to their established friends before trusting new people - that’s just human nature. You’re right, you can’t blame people for turning to the names they know they have fun with instead of grabbing every new joiner by the hand and pulling them into conversation. Luckily, it really doesn’t take much to start being a name people know they’ll have fun with.
If you listen (or read in this case) you can get a hang of the rhythm and pace, and a sense of people’s personalities. If you engage (ie ask questions of specific people, respond to the topic at hand, offer help, or ask for help of your own) you’re going to find it easier to fall into conversation with people that feels natural and helps you bond. If it goes too fast, wait for quieter, slower conversations, off-peak, so you can take your time and engage with just one or two people instead of the times when 20 people are all screaming gibberish and lobbing emojis at each other. Inside jokes are inevitable - either ask what they mean and people will usually love to tell the silly story again, let them go over your head, or wait around long enough and you’ll be the one making them. Be aware that in text chat, stuff gets lost and missed all the time - it’s not personal.
Most of all, give it time. I’m in a lot of discords, some of them huge, some of them small, and over the years I’ve seen hundreds of people come and go, and the people who successfully integrate into the groups usually try to be kind and helpful, talk a lot, volunteer to participate in things, and support other community members. It can be hard, and it’s completely possible that fast-moving text chat just isn’t your thing (which is totally fine! some people hate it), but sliding into any established group always starts out a bit nerve wracking and a bit awkward. Personally, I think it’s worth speaking up, being myself, and pushing through the awkward phase until I feel like I belong.
So, as of the 16th, I'm 22 years old.
And a few years ago, i never thought I would get to this point. I never thought i would live to be 22. Not because i had a terminal illness or anything. Not because i was "sick" in the way a lot of people view illness. I always thought that i would have killed myself before then.
I was in such a dark place for so long. When i saw 17, Depression was all i knew. I couldn't imagine a future. It was dark. There was nothing. Nothing to look forward to. Nothing to live for. Every day felt like the last. Hollow. Exhausting. Empty.
Its only because of my friends that I'm here today. They saw that something was wrong. They talked to each other and pulled me aside. They sat me down. Told me that something was wrong.
And i wouldn't hear it. I knew something was wrong. But i was mad. I was frustrated. Annoyed. It took me weeks and months to realise that they were trying to help.
And they got me help.
Even then, it wasn't easy. It still isn't. I'm heavily medicated for depression and ADD. I still have really bad lows that last for weeks at a time. I still get suicidal.
Except now, i have people i can turn to for help. My friends got my family involved. I'm seeing a regular psychologist and psychiatrist. I talk to my family and friends when things are bad.
I'm taking it slowly. At my own pace. It doesn't matter that I'm not as far ahead in life, in my studies, as everyone else my age. What matters is that I'm alive. That I'm still here. That I'm moving forward, even if i sometimes take a few steps back.
I'm alive. I'm okay.
And the future is no longer dark. There is light. Sometimes, it just takes time to find it.
My college just instagrammed their payphones (labeled in Greek, natch) and it made me viscerally remember talking to my dad on one of them and finding out I had to get on a plane the next day because my mother was dying. It’s an old, old hurt and normally just tight and achey like scar tissue, but oh holy crap. It smarts right now.
I’m fine. This happens sometimes. But I wanted to tell someone. So I told you. I hope that’s okay.
YES, NO! I GUESS?
No is a powerful word when you think about t It's what rebellions are made from It's a riot waiting to wake the people It's a power driven word No is refusal Do not believe that a no is bad decision No is an act of self preservation No can be so liberating No is the act of not giving up No is so much more badass than an unwilling yes Yes gets you places you never thought possible Yes is the start of making the impossible possible Yes is a mess that can't wait to be cleaned Yes is something beautiful to be heard A yes can bring so much joy As much as it can bring sadness Yes is so easy to say Yes is a compromise Yes has you where you are now Are you happy .... I guess I guess my life is going well I guess I could have done better I guess things could be worse I guess is a unwanted maybe I guess is a practical estimation I guess is as bad as almost As bad as probably As bad as never going to happen I guess this is the probably almost maybe Yes no you keep giving me No I am not surprised Yes I am moving on I guess you missed out
.
If you have ever picked up your entire life to try and find something better, I'm so fucking proud of you. That shit hard as fuck.
If you have ever walked away from the person you thought was your forever, my heart goes out to you. It will get easier to think about.
If you have ever found what you thought was your place in the world, only to have ghosts of the past you thought you left behind show up and try to ruin it, I'm so happy you stood up and banished them. (if you fell back to them, that's okay too. I still think you're very strong and very brave for facing them)
If you're still reading this, you are very brave, and very strong, and you deserve to be happy. Let yourself be happy, please. You are worth it.
