she can sense him before she ever sees him. the familiar scent curling around her, the relaxing effect he has on her, the soft sound of his footfalls. the rustle of clothes, the drop of his keys. she’d know it anywhere. she’s spent far too much time memorizing it. caroline exhales, feeling her shoulders curve forward as her eyes close. by the time she turns, she’s already half circled in his arms, her own sliding up under his arms, fingers curling between his shoulder blades as her face presses against his shoulder. he smells like home. like comfort and safety and all the things she’s done right in the world.  ❝ i missed you. ❞  it goes without saying, and yet the words are still mumbled into the soft fabric of his shirt. his shirt which still smells a bit like airplanes and cars and whatever seedy place he’s just come from. it’s a few more moments before she can bear to pull her cheek away from his shoulder, tipping her head back to look up at him.  ❝ everything go okay? ❞
