Maybe as Hyde he lugged around that cane gifted to him by Utterson as a symbolic reminder of his 'good' and then when he breaks it by killing Carew he loses that 'good' left in him i.e. he's completely fallen to the indulgences and temptation that came with being Mr. Hyde (thus resulting in his uncontrollable transformations).
It must have been heavy, carrying the weight of positive expectations while actively divulging in things negatively viewed in the society which would easily condemn you faster for an action they despise and forget all the good you had done.
