For the third time in a 24 hour period, I have seen a post suggesting that taking mental health breaks from social media in order to moderate the number of horrifying photos and posts you see of an active warzone makes one explicitly complicit in genocide.
I have watched this exact mentality literally and objectively kill friends of mine before. Suggesting that the strong push through emotionally charged situations and repeatedly trigger themselves for diminishing returns has led first responders I've worked with to push themselves past the breaking point, ignoring their body's pleas to take a break, until they snapped.
This is a difficult time for so many people. We should act within our capacity to attempt to pump the brakes on this fakakta michegas, but your first priority has to be yourself. Triggering yourself ad infinitum to the point of exhaustion/relapse/some breaking point doesn't help the cause one bit. The keywords are "within your capacity." Do what you have to do, but take care of yourself in the process. You cannot pour from an empty cup, you cannot work optimally if you're exhausted, and no amount of attempting to guilt trip your alleged support of a genocide will help you stand up for what's right. You might very well feel absolutely powerless in this situation regardless of how many representatives you call, emails you send, photos you look at, or articles you read. That's okay. If you need to take breaks for your own sake, that's okay too. Take care of yourself.
