Itajime shibori, which is traditionally bound by solid shapes, which I did not have, but I did have popsicle sticks. The color was a kind of poor man's indigo made with a light blue and a purple dye mixed together. The halo effect you see here is the result of one dye striking at a different rate than the other

I’ve been dyeing!

I hosted two workshops this month - the first was a naturally dyed rainbow of wool miniskeins, using red (cochineal, madder), yellow (onion skins, osage orange), and blue (indigo) dyes and overdyeing to create a full spectrum of colors!

The wool was all premordanted with alum.

The second class was an itajime shibori class, creating mandala-style fabric panels by clamping tiles (acrylic) to create areas of resistance. Careful folding creates repeating patterns, and we dyed them in indigo.

Indigo is a magical way to bring blue into your natural dye studio. Both traditional vat dyeing and fresh leaf indigo are wonderful options to create vivid designs on textile using shibori technique. This tutorial will show you how to fold a resist design with wood and dip dye in an indigo vat and with blended fresh leaf indigo. You will see the resulting itajime design on cotton.
