i go out of my way to point out how itachi isnt a flawless character and how its okay to dislike him but, personally, if i see anything vaguely negative about itachi will melt
honestly not to seem like an anti or anything but i really think that family archetype shisui/itachi is far superior to romantic shisui/itachi just bc of the way shisui treats itachi like his little brother and honestly itachi acts a lot more like a middle brother than an oldest brother. also it’s just really cute imo? shisui is such a mother hen and he’s always so sweet to both itachi and sasuke, teasing them and giving itachi advice just like an older brother would. itachi and sasuke don’t have the best father and itachi’s not the best oldest brother no matter what let’s be honest so shisui coming in and being this like big brother/somewhat father figure (as eldest kids often do) would be really sweet, much more than a romantic archetype of shisui and itachi
wanna go to bed soon so here’s my itachi meta post. first there are six things you should know about how i interpret his character:
itachi’s not a hero
he’s an antagonist/villain
his actions should not be idolized
he’s not a “good” person
despite that, he’s still very caring and kind and his love for sasuke is genuine
i do not adhere strictly to canon and put my own thoughts/interpretations into this because canon is limited and my brain is not when it comes to itachi
it/s/sus don’t touch
a lot of people on this site love to go off and say he’s just an uwu baby who’s done nothing wrong or that he’s a hero and should be hokage which is stupid mostly because it devalues the impact of his actions. he killed people, possibly over a hundred people, none of whom really needed to die. he could’ve easily chosen not to do this, if he’d had someone by his side telling him not to do stupid things. i think it’s been said many times that the only reason itachi even commits this crime is because shisui is dead, danzo isolated him and that allowed him to be more easily manipulated and forced into believing this was the only way to save his little brother.
however, the fact that he was essentially forced into doing this does not lessen the fact that he did indeed do it. just because he has an excuse doesn’t mean we get ignore what this did to sasuke, the one person he was supposed to be helping from it. he did not help sasuke at all, in fact. we see this much later in shippuden and after itachi is dead, how little care sasuke has for the world, how unopposed to dying he is. itachi’s actions caused this, perhaps it’s a symptom of a larger action, but the way that he handled things amplified this feeling of helplessness in sasuke.
the ucm itself has such a far-reaching impact on sasuke, even without his brother genjutsu-torturing him he would’ve been traumatized by this for life. itachi’s intentions were probably based around his own brainwashing, possibly because he because he felt he was weakened by shisui’s death (i’m reaching here because canon is... stupid). but the way he treats sasuke actually tears away at his strength, his compassion and love that he has for his friends. i don’t think itachi really knows better but a child should not be taught these things.
this is why itachi would make a horrible hokage, a hokage must be someone who understands how important compassion and love are within a person’s life and itachi sees none of that, he places his own weakness onto sasuke and through this we can believe that if itachi ever said “i’m going to be hokage” it would be just as ridiculous as sasuke saying it during the war arc.
he’s not a hero either, he didn’t save anything, and no one knows this more than him. his actions did not stop a war, he was brainwashed into believing so but over the course of his life i believe he comes to realize this isn’t true. he didn’t save anyone, not even sasuke, he just killed them. the system was corrupt and told everyone else he was a hero and that he sacrificed himself, and he did indeed sacfifice himself but not in a way that helped anyone and just played into his own complex.
he’s not a good person because he can’t seem to empathize with anyone, can’t understand how people feel or how they’ll react to any given situation. he’s also shit at planning and nothing he planned for sasuke’s life really worked out for him at all or in the way he thought it would. he probably didn’t even think he was going to live that long. he probably hoped sasuke would kill his friend and get mangekyo before they fought so that he could die earlier.
itachi wants to die. his strongest urge is death. he has a complex about it and tried to kill himself for the first time at the age of ten or so (maybe younger? can’t remember). he hates himself completely and fully, he’s probably dreamed up a million ways sasuke could kill him. he can’t kill himself because then sasuke wouldn’t get his closure but also because, as most suicidal people are, he’s terrified of taking his own life. it’s much different to imagine it than to actually do it. i’ve always kid of had this awful joke that itachi has one of the most powerful curse of hatreds in the uchiha clan it’s just not as clear because all his hate is directed at himself.
so how is he kind? how is he caring? tbh he isn’t, not in the naruto canon at least. every inch of kindness he had was most undoubtedly killed the day he murdered his entire family. the fact of the matter is, however, he has the potential to have become a kind person again should he have lived or not had to experience the ucm. me, stupid believer in hope and recovery that i am, thinks that he could indeed become the person we saw in itachi shinden and all those sasuke back flashes. i think the resurrected itachi we see validates this somewhat as this itachi who has died and now knows that death he craved so much before, can see his mistakes more clearly. he’s still hesitant to admit them but he has learned, death has taught him something in an odd way.
but he did it all out of love, his own twisted sense of love for his little brother that has been horribly corrupted by the tragic life he has lead, the kindness that was stolen from him and the belief that he is weak and hopeless. he genuinely believes in sasuke so much that he can’t see how much his own actions hurt this person he loves. the way things end up are not planned out by him in anyway, it’s all pure luck that sasuke and he even live that long. he’s an idiot who’s put his little brother on this pedestal that sasuke can never hope to actually stand on.
tl;dr:
itachi was horribly fucked up by his own actions that were forced upon by a corrupt system and thus his love for sasuke is no longer the pure thing it used to be but now the only way he can cling to hope for a death he desperately craves, bringing sasuke down with him and making him a major antagonist in his life, a barrier to overcome in more ways than just physically. he was once a good person, however, and could be that way again if given a chance.
itachi is an ass (affectionate)
naruto doesn’t have enough bishis like is it just itachi? is that it?
thinking of posts to make like how are itachi and char similar 🤔
itachi is silly boy
